A tale told about Douglassville pioneer Alvis H. Snipes,
b. 7-2-1861, d. 10-12-1928, brother of "Jody" Snipes, and married to Dorothy Catherine 'Dolly' Oliver b.11-10-1874 d. 18-12-1957,
This tale concerned the theft of a pair of mules. They were 2 very fine and rather costly animals that he had bought. He raised horses (and cows) but these 2 mules were special. He loved and petted them and gave them special treats. He had a special little "call" that they would answer and come to him from anywhere in the pasture.
Well, it seems that they turned up missing and later someone reported that he had seen two mules similar to his in a valley not too far away.
Grandpa Snipes, as he was known to Julia Snipes Swint McKinney, got the Sheriff, who happened to be Nat Curtright, and they went out there. Grandpa told him, "I'll stand on this little hill and call to them with my special call and if they raise their heads and come towards me, they'll be my mules." So they did just that and sure enough, here the mules came, running over to Grandpa.
Sheriff Curtright agreed that he was sure the mules belonged to Grandpa and told him to take them; which he did and drove them back home.
