T. F. STEED, CITIZEN AND CHURCH LEADER
Because of limited space and an abundance of material this paper has had to confine most of its lineage to the very oldest families in the community and their descendants. Many other families who came in after 1910 and later have done much toward building the town and helping make it a better place in which to live.
Among them are people like T. F. Steed family, who came to Avinger in about 1919. Mr. Steed was an untiring rural mail carrier for almost thirty years, until his death in 1948. He started out carrying the mail over the rough roads, first in a buggy with two white horses, later in a Model T and then for the rest of the time in more modern conveyances, wearing out an average of a car a year. He was and Mrs. Steed has been a first class citizen in every other way, always standing up for what was right and best for the community. Many people remember Mr. Steed as a song leader and as one who did much toward furthering the work of the local Baptist church of which he was a real working member down through the years. Mrs. Steed still resides in the family home on Walnut Street.
