THE CITY OF LINDEN
Linden was established as the County Seat of Cass County, and as such most of its government capacities were left to the County. From old records, it is found that the town was incorporated, and the first City Government established about the year 1858, with John Stewart serving as Mayor and John Meeks as Town Marshall.
From this date until May 13, 1913, very little about the City Government can be found, possibly because all records were lost in the tornado of 1908.
Records now held by the City of Linden reflect that in May of 1913 the City Government was established with J.C. Fant as Mayor; M.D. Givens, I.N. Marett, J.S. Morris, J.E.A. Banger, and L.C. In February 1914, a franchise was let by the City of Linden to S.E. George, T.G. Williams, W.H. Harris, B.F. Duncan and R.P. Fant to install an electric light plant in such town, which for some reason did not operate. However, a plant was established by J.F. Rhyne of the 22nd day of October 1919. This plant was later sold to Mr. Floyd of Naples, and he in turn sold to Southwestern Gas and Electric Company, the holders of the present service Franchise for our city.
On or about April 6th, 1914, a franchise was issued to J.J. Eller to install, build, erect, maintain and operate a telephone exchange in the City of Linden, which system was placed in operations by the said J.J. Eller and later sold and resold until it is now owned and operated by the Southwestern Associated Telephone Company.
A franchise was let on the 25th day of March, 1929 to Arkansas National Gas Company to erect, maintain, operate and conduct a natural Gas Distributing Company in the city.
In March of 1934, a contract was let to build and install a Water and Sewer System in the city of Linden. The city owns the water and sewer system. The contract price was the sum of $50,661.65 of which amount $39,000.00 was raised by the issuance of Revenue Bonds. Soon thereafter, in early 1935, a fire truck and other fire fighting equipment was purchased by the city and a Volunteer Fire Department organized. This department has, by the use of such equipment, rendered to the citizens of Linden and surrounding territory a good and valid service.
Other than the above mentioned bonds, the City of Linden has no bonded indebtedness.
