SULPHUR FORK IRON COMPANY ORGANIZED IN 1863
The Sulphur Fork Iron Company was organized and incorporated in 1863, the Company was organized June 15, 1863, with nineteen stockholders, the State of Louisiana taking 52 shares. The furnace was erected just west of Springdale and ore was obtained from nearby Bowie Hill. The furnace was built and was 34 feet square and 36 feet high.
In addition to the furnace, the plant equipment consisted of a large coal shed, engine room, molding room, steam sawmill and grist mill, machine shop, and the necessary dwellings (and people to work here). The capacity was eight tons of iron a day and both pig iron and hollow ware, including stoves were produced. Work stopped April 1, 1865, and was never resumed
