Submitted by: Lana Hester Schultz Perry Washington Goodson Funeral notice: Supplied by: Lana Hester Schultz. Notice given to me by grandmother Elvie Howard. Well Known Citizen Died Monday 18 Jan. 1926 Double funeral of P.W. Goodson and Grand Daughter Held Tuesday. A touch of sadness was felt in Hughes Springs and vicinity when it came to be known that Perry W. Goodson had passed away at his home in the Sardis Community six miles east of Hughes Springs. He had been in ill health for some time, and had been under the care of physicians for several months, at times he was able to come to town but he gradually grew worse until Monday about noon he passed to the Great Beyond. Mr. Goodson numbered his friends in every walk of life and held the respect of all who knew him, as he was a plain, honest, upright man, whose disposition was one of good cheer and kindness, was an affectionate husband and father, a public spirited citizen. He was born April 28, 1856, was 70 years of age, was married to miss. Minerva Blanton Dec. 13, 1877, to them were born eleven children, eight of whom are living. He joined the Hopewell Baptist Church at Sardis about 1890 and lived a devoted Christian life until death called him. He bore adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly; he had always taken an active part in the affairs of state. (Can't read a line here) active and successful businessman and farmer, he having been Vice President of the First National Bank of Hughes Springs since it's organization in 1903. (A few lines are missing here I believe) Services were at Sardis Baptist Church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 in the presence of the largest crowd that ever attended funeral at that place, which was evidence of the esteem in which he was held by his friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Shaddix, assisted by Rev's G. K. Williams, Jas A. Shaddix, and C.C. Carricker. After which his body was laid to rest in Sardis Cemetery. The floral offering was the most profuse ever witnessed at that place. He is survived by his aged companion, two sons, R.W. and John Goodson, six daughters Mrs. W. W. Lineberger, Mrs. Jesse Ayres, Mrs. Berry Watson, Mrs. C. L. Howard all of Sardis, Mrs. Jesse Booker of Shreveport, LA. and Mrs. Carney Niblett of this place. A Large circle of relatives and friends. Little Grace Marie Goodson, age six years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Goodson of Sardis community passed away Monday January 18, 1926, after an illness of only a few days, her death was caused from pneumonia. Bright, Happy, and Cheerful Grace Marie carried sunshine with her wherever she went. She always had a smile and a word for her little friends. Her death comes as a dark shadow to the parents, brothers and sisters who loved her so dearly, and was made much sadder by having passed on at almost the same time as that of her grandfather. The funeral service were held at the same place and hour as that of her grandfather P. W. Goodson, and the floral offerings placed upon her little grave were profuse, and very beautiful. She is survived by her parents (and there is some missing here).
