Clay County TXGenWeb Project LAST RITES HELD FOR WILLIAM McGREGORY AT BOWIE WEDNESDAY - Last rites for William Nathan McGregory were held at the First Baptist church Wednesday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Ples Warren of Bellevue officiating, assisted by Rev. G.B. Bradshaw. Interment followed in the Elmwood Cemetery, under the direction of Owens-Brumley Funeral Home. Mr. McGregory died at a Wichita Falls hospital, July 15 (1946). He was a native of Bonham, Fannin county, born September 16, 1872. He later came to Clay county where on October 12, 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Stella Elkins, at Buffalo Springs. He was in business at Buffalo Springs at this time. Mr. McGregory carried the mail from Buffalo Springs to Bellevue for fifteen years and carried the mail from Bowie to Newport for three years. He could neither read nor write, it is said, but during the eighteen years he carried the mail he never made a mistake in delivering it. Mr. McGregory farmed seven years near Buffalo Springs before he came to Bowie in 1922. Since coming to Bowie he has operated the McGregory Hotel for the past twenty-three years. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. B.W. Bohn, Marlin; three sons, Amos and Fred, both of Bowie and Joe McGregory of Fort Worth; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Redin, Electra and Mrs. Frank Fryer, Conroe; one half-brother, Charlie Roland, New Mexico, and five grandchildren. Mr. McGregory was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been a Christian for over forty-five years. Those assisting as pallbearers were Charlie Dickey, Woody Biggerstaff, Oscar Underwood, B.E.
