FLAT TOP RANCH CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS
This old abandoned cemetery has been known as the Flat Top Ranch Cemetery, Coffey Cemetery, and the Burl Brown Cemetery. It is located on a hill top in the pasture of a ranch now owned by Allen Turner, about one half mile north of where Elm Creek runs under FM 2134. It is very grown up.
The cemetery is located on the old Flat Top Ranch of Rich Coffey. The only marked grave is that of Burl Brown. It has been said there are eight other graves there. In our survey of this cemetery, we noted at least 12 and possibly as many as 22 or 23 graves, laid out in a general north-south line of the Brown grave. Some of these are adult graves, some children. In the pile of cut stone around the base of the Brown grave, we found two pieces of stone: "B. D." and "1833". The only marked stone, which was restored by the family some years ago reads:
BROWN, A. B. - Sept 8, 1832 - May 11, 1870
From various accounts, other possible burials here could include:
ARNOLD, Dan - died June 1, 1871 - 18 years old - killed by
Indians
LEMMONS, Lapoleon - died June 1, 1871 - killed by Indians
BEDDO, ? - died 1870's - nephew of Rich Coffey - killed by Indians
? - Texas Ranger - died 1870's - shot by Indians near the Colorado
River - died at Coffey Ranch
