LOREANEY JAMES GRAVE, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS
This grave is on the west side of Elm Creek, southwest of the bridge, just off FM 2134 between Voss and Leaday. It is just across the creek from the rock corrals of Flat Top Ranch of Rich Coffey. The grave is above the creek in the pasture, with no fence, but the marker has withstood the wear of time.
This single grave is that of
Loreaney
James, born in Saline County, Arkansas July 6, 1830 and married
George
James ca 1850. Mrs. Fogg Coffey is said to have told Mrs.
Lucy
Rodden
of Valera about the stone and the woman whose family did not own
any
land,
but had a horse herd and were camping on Elm Creek near Flat Top,
in a
cabin someone had built there. Late one afternoon she went
down
toward
the creek to call her milk cows, leaving her little children in
the
house.
A band of Indians came riding between her and the cabin, and when
she
broke
and ran they easily caught and lanced her to death. She was
buried
there and the family moved on. Her stone reads:
"In memorial of Loreaney JAMES - The wife of George James - who
was
bornd in Selene Co, Arkansas in the year of our Lord 1830 and
departed
this life Feb the 20, 1875"
