The first church building in Burkett was built by the Presbyterians in 1900.  One of the early pastors was Dr. B. I. McClellan, founder of Daniel Baker College in Brownwood.  Some of the prominent members were George Rae, J. R. Brown and J. L. Clarke.  Miss Kate Clarke and E. H. Clarke were married at the dedication of the building.

Elder Hawkins was one of the early preachers for the Church of Christ.  Services were held near what is now known as “Campbellite Bend” on the Bayou.  They purchased the Presbyterian Church building and used it until they built a house of worship about 1935.

One of the early Baptist churches was pastored by Rev. Dan Matthews and D. C. Stark served for several years as a Methodist pastor for a church known as Pecan Grove Methodist Church.  Both the Methodist and the Baptist built new buildings around 1937.
