Something About Ralph
.....
I first became interested in photography in the eighth grade, and was the yearbook photographer at Coleman High School for four years. I began college at Texas Tech, studying archaeology and anthropology. After a year, I transferred to Sam Houston in Huntsville, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in photography in 1969. During my college years and following, I was a general photographer and lab instructor for the Photography Department at Sam Houston State University, a commercial photographer for Jack F. Laws Photography of Houston, and head of the Photography Department of the Monsanto Company at Texas City. I did post-graduate work at the University of Houston, Saint Thomas University and the College of the Mainland in photography and cinematography, and completed a number of hours in continuing education courses, primarily in the fields of archival cataloging, historical preservation, as well as attending a number of seminars on various aspects of photography. After the death of my dad in 1974, I returned to Coleman to help run the farm and purchased Hugh Capps Studio, which I have operated for the past 32 years as Terry Studio. I was the first photographer, with a college degree in photography, to operate a studio in central Texas. I have all the negative files of Hugh Capps Studio and Terry Studio, from 1947 to date, which I still maintain for reproduction and historical purposes. I do all types of photography, including studio portraiture, wedding casuals and commercial work, but specialize in candid wedding photography and the reproduction and restoration of old photographs. Non-job things I have done since returning to Coleman, mostly in the field of local history: 1981 - 1994: Chairman of the Coleman County Historical Commission, the county arm of the Texas Historical Commission. 1983 - 1986: Editor of the 1312 page, two volume history, Coleman County and Its People, published in 1985 and reprinted in 1986. 1978 - 1988: Researched, compiled, co-authored and published Coleman County Cemetery Inscriptions, a three volume set of tombstone inscriptions of the cemeteries of Coleman County, containing over 750 pages. 1983 - 1988: Researched, edited and published Coleman High School Football Records, 1910 - 1988. 1990 - 1991: Researched, edited and prepared for publication The Episcopal Church in Northwest Texas, 1874-1990 - a history of the churches and diocese of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas. 1985-present: Lecturer and instructor on local history, photography and genealogy to school and civic groups. 1978 - 1990: Statistician for the Coleman High School boy's basketball team. 1961-present: Family genealogist, planning many reunions and other family events. 1984-present: Professional genealogist, having researched in every state in the southeast United States and many counties in Texas. I write and publish several family newsletters, including The Greer International Newsletter and The Hammonds Journal. 1974-present: Coleman County Chamber of Commerce Member. 1983 - 1986: Coleman Public Library Board Member. 1990-1996: Coleman County Senior Citizens Foundation Board Member. 1985-present: Member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Currently serving as a Lay Reader, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and church historian. Served on a number of Diocesan committees, Diocesan Convention Delegate, past Church secretary, adult Sunday School teacher, editor of St. Mark's Remarks newsletter, and Senior Warden for a number of terms. Awards received: 1981: Received the Texas Historical Commission's Distinguished Service Award. 1985: Received plaque from the Coleman Bluecat Booster Club as longtime basketball statistician. 1988: Presented the Top Cat Award by the Bluecat Booster Club in support of CHS athletics. 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005: Honored by my classmates for organizing our class reunions. 2004:
Received the Coleman County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year
