Coleman High School - Boys Basketball Cats Take Two-Game Lead With Win Over Winters; To Haskell Tonight Remaining undefeated in district play, the Coleman Bluecats stretched their conference lead to two games last Friday night by downing Winters here, 69-55, while Merkel helped the cause with a win over Stamford. Coleman had gone into the game with a one game lead over Winters and Stamford. For Coach Jack Baucom’s lads it gave them a 17-3 season record and 5-0 in the district. In the other two games of the evening, the Bluecat junior varsity had a tougher time than usual but recorded their 12th win in 13 starts in downing Winters, 64-58, while the Ramblettes lost their third district game to the Winters fems. The Cats will complete the first half of the round-robin schedule away from home this week, as they go to Haskell for three games this evening (Tuesday) and then visit Hamlin Friday evening. Both evenings will have three games on tap, with the junior varsity units playing at 5:00, the girls game at 6:30 and the boys varsity at 8:00. In the boys varsity game, David Skelton had one of his better nights as he hit 21 points to lead all scorers. He was followed by Sal Andrade with 13, Tommy Medrano 14, Rickey Smith and Ben Wright 6 each, Mickey Bartley 2 and Jack Crockett 2. Fred Wilder led Winters with 11. Coleman led at all quarter marks, 15-9, 35-23 and 48-34. Joe Boatright netted 13 to lead the Coleman junior varsity, followed closely by Donnie Wood and Mark Martin with 15 and 13 points respectively. Billy Jones and Sam Baker had 4 each, Jimmy Andrade 3, and Joe Hollingsworth, Jimmy Bartley and Randy Young 2 each. (The Coleman Democrat-Voice, Coleman, Texas, January 14, 1969, page 1-B.) |
