Coleman versus Brady

September 1, 2006 - Played at Coleman

Brady at Coleman

"This is a battle between two teams that had different experiences last season.  The Bulldogs struggled through a winless campaign, but there is new hope as longtime West Texas coach and Brownwood-native Glen Jones arrived in the offseason to be the new coach.  For Coleman, the Bluecats are looking to continue the momentum they gained during last year's long playoff run under new head coach Rusty Buzzard. Buzzard's back, and so is his junior son Bronson, who missed all of last year because of an injury.  The younger Buzzard will play running back and defensive back.  He was a third-team all-state selection at Yorktown as a freshman when he intercepted 10 passes.  One of Brady's top players might be Holden Jacoby, a big defensive end who enters his third year on varsity." (Pre-Game Write-Up, San Angelo Standard Times.)

Coleman 48, Brady 0

"The Coleman Bluecats left the Brady Bulldogs feeling blue after a 48-0 pounding Friday night.  The Bulldogs' first game playing in UIL Class 2A found them outmatched by their Class 3A opponent.  Coleman's Bronson Buzzard scored two touchdowns, and the home team's defense added two more with an interception returned for a TD and a fumble recovered in the end zone."  (Abilene Reporter News.)

Bluecat kicker Oscar Villeda (6) was kept busy last Friday night during the Brady game, kicking extra points on six out of seven tries.   The soccer style kicker is shown in action with Adam Vasquez (5) holding the ball.
We hope to see Oscar in action a lot this football season.

Missed that one!

Coleman and Brady fans alike putting the new concession stands to use!

Fumble coming up, which was recovered by Dalton DeLeon in the end zone for a touchdown.

Bluecats Win Big in Season Opener
By Michael Autry

Bluecat Coach Rusty Buzzard must have been all smiles Friday night as he watched his players handily dominate the Brady Bulldogs in a 48-0 victory.  Buzzard has previously commented on how the team is young and should develop with game experience, but fans in attendance Friday night saw the appearance of a well-organized, experienced, and talented team that is ready to face tougher competition this season.  Sophomore quarterback Colton Buzzard showed that his youth does not hinder his abilities on the football field, as his mixture of rushing and passing turned deadly against a Bulldog defense that never knew what to expect.

In addition to an outstanding show by QB Buzzard, Coleman displayed a diversified offensive attack, which included eight separate players with rushing yards, and five players with receiving yards.  The offensive line wore down the Bulldog defense, opening holes for the runners, helping Coleman to achieve 351 yards of rushing offense, and giving QB Buzzard time to throw, helping him to complete seven of fourteen passes for 109 yards.  Bluecat fans got to see the talents of backup QB Glen Edington when Colton Buzzard sat out the last quarter and a half after cramping up at the end of a long run.  Edington completed his only attempted pass for 18 yards, and personally added a handful of rushing yards including one rushing touchdown.

The sturdy Bluecat defense held Brady to only two first downs in the first half of the game, and only two in the second half.  Both of the second-half first downs came in the final seconds of the game.  The Bulldogs put up only 37 rushing yards, and seven passing yards, and the down and dirty Bluecat defensive linemen made the game a miserable experience for the Bulldog quarterback, as they racked up frequent and numerous sacks, hurried throws, and knock-downs.

Of course, in a 48-0 victory, we must never forget those players whose jersey numbers range from 50 to 76, as they are the hard-hitting-hammer all guts, no glory offensive and defensive linemen.   These athletes perform the grunt work, and after said 48-0 victory, deserve to have their name in the newspaper.  They are Tye Bolton, J. D. Crowder, Myles Baker, Casey lofton, Jamal Agbor, Matt Strickland, Jack Reynolds, N’Difone Agbor, Carlos Barrios, Thomas Wells, Johnathon Kight, and John Wilkinson.

Scoring highlights for the Bluecats were Adam Vasquez with a three-yard rushing TD in the first quarter, Colton Buzzard with a 26-yard rushing TD in the first, Curtis Yates with a16-yard interception run back for a TD in the second, Bronson Buzzard with a six-yard rushing TD in the second, Dalton DeLeon with a TD on a recovery of a fumble into the endzone, Kavin Bowers with a five-yard rushing TD in the fourth, and backup Quarterback Glen Edington with a one-yard rushing TD in the fourth.

Bluecat kicker Oscar Villeda hit six out of seven extra point attempts.  The only failed extra-point attempt was due to a bobbled snap, and no kick was even attempted.

Leading the rushing effort for the Cats was QB Colton Buzzard with 10 carries for 169 yards, followed by Kavin Bowers with six carries for 43 yards, Bronson Buzzard with 11 carries for 36 yards, Adam Vasquez with four carries for 27 yards, Stanley Cole with five carries for 26 yards, Glen Edington with six carries for 19 yards, Anthony Morales with three carries for 18 yards, and Brandon Worsham with two carries for 13 yards.

Adam Vasquez led the receiving attack with two catches for 42 yards, followed by Chase Avants with three receptions for 37 yards, Bronson Buzzard with one catch for 27 yards, Stanley Cole with one catch for 18 yards, and Dalton DeLeon with one catch for seven yards.

"Coleman put 48 points on the scoreboard against Brady thanks to some guys that don't always get the credit they deserve, the offensive line. So, we wanted to share these two pictures taken by Gary Strickland "in the trenches" and congratulate the Bluecat offensive linemen on a job well done.  Casey Lofton (55), Matt Strickland (62), Jack Reynolds (63), Myles Baker (54), John Wilkinson (76).  Chase Avants (11) is the tight end, also part of the blocking scheme."  (colemannews.com)
