Cats to Face District 5-2A Champs in First Round of Playoffs
By Michael Autry
(Coleman Chronicle and Democrat-Voice, November 14, 2006.)

The Bluecats have enjoyed their "ups" and have weathered through some "downs" in 2006, but all the pieces fell into place to secure a playoff spot after their win over the Jim Ned Indians last week.  A loss to the Indians would have put a prompt end to the pigskin fun and ushered in basketball season.  But, Coach Rusty Buzzard and his Bluecat Warriors assembled enough wins to roll into the post-season, where they will first face the Indians of Haskell on neutral ground in Cisco this Friday.  The Cats and Indians will square off at Chelsey Stadium in Cisco at 7:00 Friday night.

Haskell will be representing District 5-2A, where they reeled in a district championship after their 10-0 season (7-0 in district).  The winner of this game will then meet the winner of the Ozona vs. Sonora match-up.  Ozona and Sonora will convene Saturday evening at San Angelo Stadium in San Angelo.  The Indians boast a 10-0 record on the season, but the best team they played (record-wise) was Anson at 7-3.  They only beat Anson 7-0 in overtime.  And, since Coleman comes from a district that had two tough 8-2 teams, one might speculate that 6-2A (Coleman’s district) will have better football teams to offer than 5-2A.   It’s just speculation.  But, Haskell is a quality team, and will be no push-over.  The Indians were 1A regional semifinalists last year, with an 11-2 overall record, before moving up to 2A this season.  Haskell will bring experience to the field, as they returned seven starters on each side of the ball in 2006, and will offer a solid offensive line and a tough defense.

Amazing Bluecats Claim Bi-District Championship
Wait to Play Either Sonora or Ozona Next Week

Blondes have more fun, just ask the Coleman Bluecats.  It took triple overtime Friday night in Cisco to beat previously undefeated Haskell 48 to 42 for the Bi-District Championship.  Fans were treated to yet another edge - of - the - seat - nail - biter which will long live in the memories of those fortunate enough to be there.  Here is how it all went down against Haskell:

* The first possession of Coleman and first possession of Haskell ended in punts
* On Coleman's second possession, the Bluecats drove 86 yards to score with 4:16 left in the first quarter on a five yard run by Brandon Worsham.  Oscar Villeda kicked the PAT, Coleman led 7 to 0.  (Worsham shown left on a 34 yard run during the drive.)
* Haskell went from their 31 yard line to 4th and goal on Coleman's three yard line.  Stanley Cole made the tackle to keep Haskell from scoring and the ball went over to Coleman on downs.
* Coleman's next drive started on their own four.  They worked their way the length of the field.  A 10 yard pass to Dalton DeLeon put the Bluecats on Haskell's one yard line.  Bronson Buzzard scored on a one yard run with 9:18 left in the second quarter (shown below).  Oscar Villeda kicked the PAT, Coleman led 14 to 0
* Haskell fumbled on the next possession which was recovered by Chase Avants on the Coleman 22
* Coleman punted on their next possession
* Haskell marched down the field rapidly and scored with 3:31 left in the 2nd quarter on a 11 yard run for a TD.  PAT was good making the score 14 to 7.
* Coleman took possession at their own 30.  With 1:49 and facing 4th and 6 on Haskell's 41, Coleman threw an incomplete pass and turned the ball over on downs.
* Haskell then ran one series and had to punt.
* Coleman ran the clock out to end the first half with the Bluecats leading 14 to 7.

* Haskell took possession at their own 34 to begin the 3rd quarter.  They faced 3rd and goal on the Coleman two yard line.  Quarterback pitched to Guzman who fumbled the ball into the end zone and went out of bounds giving Coleman a touchback.
* Coleman had 1st and 10 on their own 20 yard line but ran only one play when Worsham fumbled, recovered by Haskell.
* Haskell took the ball at the Coleman 17 and wound up scoring a touchdown with 4:29 left in the 3rd on a one yard run.  PAT was good, game tied 14 to 14.
* Coleman received the ensuing kickoff and after one series was attempting a punt which was blocked.  Haskell recovered the ball on Coleman's 13.
* Haskell's Guzman ran the ball in for a TD on the first play with 3:26 left in the 3rd quarter.  PAT kick was good, Haskell 21 to Coleman's 14.
* Both teams traded punts to finish out the third quarter.

* Coleman opened the 4th quarter on their own 37 yard line but with a 2nd and 9 on the Haskell 46 Colton Buzzard passed to Dalton DeLeon for a TD with 10:59 left in the game.  PAT kick by Villeda was good, game tied 21 to 21.
* Haskell's next possession ran 6 minutes off the clock ending with a TD giving them the lead 28 to 21 with 4:15 left in the game.
* Chase Avants received the ensuing kickoff and ran it down the Coleman sideline for a TD.  PAT kick was good by Villeda tying the game at 28 to 28 with 4:08 left in the game.
* Haskell received the kickoff and returned the ball to the Coleman 41.  They scored a TD on a 22 yard run with 1:04 left in the 4th quarter.  PAT good, Haskell 35 to Coleman's 28.
* Chase Avants received the kickoff and ran it back to Coleman's 46.  Brandon Worsham caught a Colton Buzzard pass and ran the ball to Haskell's four yard line.  With :15 left, Colton Buzzard threw a four yard pass to Dalton DeLeon for a TD.  PAT good to tie the game at 35 to 35.  The game went into overtime.

Overtime #1:
* Coleman started with the ball on the 25, fumbled on the first play and lost seven yards.  Buzzard threw to Avants to advance the ball to the 11.  Facing 3rd and goal on the 9, an interference call against Haskell moved the ball to the two.  Bronson Buzzard scored a TD, PAT kick was good.  Coleman 42, Haskell 35.
* Haskell ran four plays and scored on a run by the QB.  PAT kick was good to tie the game at 42 to 42.

Overtime #2 - (Started three hours after the opening kickoff):
* Haskell had the first possession.  Thanks to Coleman penalties for tackling out of bounds and offsides, Haskell moved the ball to the 4 yard line but fumbled.
* Coleman did not make a first down on their possession so Overtime #2 ended tied 42 to 42.

Overtime #3:
* Coleman took possession first.  Colton Buzzard ran the ball to the 14.  On the next play passed to Glen Edington for a TD.  Rules say the teams must try for two points in the third overtime.  Coleman failed to convert the two pointer and led 48 to 42.
* On Haskell's possession, they got to the 9 yard line and fumbled.  Casey Lofton recovered the ball for Coleman and the game was over, Bluecats win 48 to 42, proving blondes do have more fun!!
