Bluecats Remain Undefeated With Victory Over Rotan
(colemannews.com, September 16, 2006)
An ugly win is better than a pretty loss. That pretty much is
how Coach Rusty Buzzard felt about the Coleman victory over Rotan 21 to
12. But a win is a win and the Cats can go into their bye week with
a 3-0 pre-season record. The Bluecats didn't get off to a good start
and seemed sluggish for much of the first half. It was Rotan that
scored first holding Coleman scoreless until late in the second quarter.
The Cats looked much better in the second half and held off last quarter
attempts by the Yellowhammers to get back in the game. To the credit
of Rotan, they were a shifty bunch with much team speed and enough talent
to carry them well when they get into district competition. To Coleman's
credit, the Bluecats never gave up and played hard-nosed defense we've
come to know and love. To the credit of the Bluecat fans, there was
more blue in the stadium than there was orange. The game summary
and Cat Stats follow:
* Coleman won the toss - first series ended with Coleman losing a fumble
* Rotan's first series ended when Coleman's Bronson Buzzard intercepted
a pass
* Coleman's second series ended with a fumbled exchange between the
quarterback and center, Rotan recovered
* Rotan scored the first TD of the game on a 3 yard run by quarterback
Josh Reese with :31 remaining in the first
quarter.
Coleman's Chase Avants blocked the extra point, Rotan 6 and Coleman 0
* Coleman recovered an on-side kick at midfield to begin a new series.
Rotan eventually took over on downs after
Coleman
failed to convert a 4th and 6 play
* Rotan shot themselves in the foot with two penalties to help stop
their drive. Curtis Yates also made two quality tackles
for the Bluecats. Series ended in a punt by Rotan
* Coleman went three plays and had to punt
* Rotan stalled on a 4th and 9 and had to punt
* Coleman scored on their next series on a 38 yard romp by Stanley
Cole with 2:58 left in the 2nd quarter. Oscar Villeda
kicked the extra point, Coleman 7, Rotan 6
* Rotan ran into a stiff Coleman defense on the next series and wound
up punting on 4th and 26
* Coleman's final drive before the half featured a pass from Colton
Buzzard to Dalton DeLeon for 25 yards to set up a 3
yard touchdown run by Bronson Buzzard with :12 left in the half. Villeda's
PAT was good, Coleman 14, Rotan
12 at the half
Second Half
* Rotan punted on their first possession
* Coleman took possession at their own 31 with 10:17 left in the 3rd
and scored a touchdown with 1:43 left in the
quarter as Felipe Cruz caught a pass intended for Stanley Cole but was
deflected off his body to Cruz. Villeda's
PAT was good, Coleman 21, Rotan 6
* Rotan's next drive ended with a huge defensive effort by the Bluecats,
culminating with a Glen Edington, #22 shown
above, interception of a Josh Reese pass at the goal to keep Rotan from
scoring, giving possession back to the
Bluecats
* Coleman faced a 4th and 21 and failed to convert on a long incomplete
pass
* Rotan's next series ended when Coleman's Dalton DeLeon intercepted
a Josh Reese pass with 4:44 left in the game
* Coleman's offense stalled and turned the ball over on downs
* Rotan changed quarterbacks to #8 Brady Adams who threw a TD pass
to Reese with 2:09 remaining. Rotan tried a
2-point pass for the extra point which was intercepted by Curtis Yates
who returned the ball untouched 100
yards to the Bluecat end zone but a penalty called the play back, Coleman
21, Rotan 12
* Coleman recovered the ensuing on-side kick by Rotan but the Bluecats
had to punt a short time later
* Rotan's last series failed to generate much yardage, time ran out,
Coleman victorious 21 to 12.
