Bluecats Send Wolves Back to Their Den
(colemannews.com - 9/21/2008)

The home side of Hufford Field was filled to capacity Friday night for the 2008 homecoming game against the Colorado City Wolves. In what was a very physical ballgame, the good guys prevailed by a final of 28-19 to stay undefeated at 4-0. It was the final non-district game.

1st Quarter
The Bluecats took the opening kickoff. Dalton DeLeon returned the ball to the 32. The Cats moved the ball downfield against a large Colorado City front and, four minutes later, scored the first touchdown of the game, a 3 yard run by Stan Cole with 7:48 to go in the quarter. Colton Buzzard kicked the point after to make the score 7-0.  Kicker Carlos Barrios gave the Wolves the old "onside kick" which was recovered by Bluecat Andrew Isom. Add to that a 15 yard penalty on the Wolves and the Bluecats found themselves at the C-City 14.  Cole rumbled to the three which set up the next score, a three yard run by Glen Edington with 5:58 in the quarter.  Buzzard added the extra point to give Coleman an early 14-0 lead before the Wolves had even run an offensive play.  Barrios kicked was returned by J C Johnson of C-City. Tack on a face mask penalty against the Bluecats and the Wolves were suddenly at the Coleman 33.   But one thing the Bluecats like to do, and do very well, is play defense.  It came down to the Wolves howling on 4th down and 2 at the Bluecat three. They got one, but not two, and the ball went over on downs.  Starting at their own 2 yard line, the Bluecats moved a few yards when a Colton Buzzard pass was intercepted by C-City's Richard Luera at the Coleman 11.  Pinned against the wall, the defense couldn't hold back C-City this time. The Bluecat turnover resulted in the Wolves scoring on an 11 yard pass from Clint White to Manuel Garza with 45 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter. The point after kick was short resulting in a 14-6 Bluecat lead.  The kickoff was a ground roller and was recovered by Zach Doyle at the Bluecat 30. A fumbled exchange between center Duston Crawford and QB Buzzard was recovered by Buzzard. But, in the process, the Bluecats lost their starting center for the rest of the game. Crawford sustained a knee injury and will be evaluated this week. Ross Jackson replaced Crawford in the lineup.

2nd Quarter
More determined than ever, Edington made a nice run to the C-City 44. Buzzard ran to the 22. Cole carried it to the 6. A couple plays later, Edington scored on another 3 yard run with 6:52 left in the 2nd quarter. Buzzard's extra point kick was good to make the score 21-6.  Following the kick, the Wolves started at their own 35. Following some incomplete passes, they punted to the Bluecat 27.  After a 15 yard personal foul on the Wolves for roughing the passer, the Bluecats moved to their own 40. Tempers were beginning to flare. Both teams were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bluecats punted.  From their own 40 yard line, the Wolves went to the air as White connected with Garza to get to the Bluecat 34.  Then, with three Bluecat defenders covering receiver J C Johnson, he somehow caught a 34 yard pass from White and ran into the south end zone to score with 1:34 before the half. The C-City two point pass was incomplete to make the score Bluecats 21, Wolves 12.  Dalton DeLeon returned the kickoff to the Bluecat 28. Zach Doyle had a couple nice runs to midfield but time expired at the half.

Half
Five senior girls from CHS were escorted by their dads to the center of Hufford Field where Nancy Cruz was selected as Homecoming Queen 2008. After a fine performance by the Bluecat band, the teams returned to the field. "We can't afford any more injuries," said Coach Rusty Buzzard. Not only had Crawford left the game with a knee injury, but Glen Edington, while playing defense and making a tackle, reinjured a knee which kept him out of two previous games. Crawford and Edington will be evaluated this week.

3rd Quarter
The Bluecats kicked to the Wolves who returned the ball to the 33. A pass from White was intercepted by Bluecat Kyle Kemp giving Coleman the ball at the C-City 36.

Buzzard passed to Travis Brixey who rumbled to the 9. Doyle ran the ball to the 4. Buzzard was sacked for a loss back to the 7. The Bluecats ended up trying a 26 yard field goal which Buzzard missed.  The Wolves couldn't get their offense in gear and punted, a boomer that went from the C-City 12 to the Coleman 18. A holding penalty on the Bluecats moved the ball back to the 8. After a time-out by the Wolves, Zach Doyle made a big run of 52 yards. But, moments later, a Colton Buzzard pass was intercepted by C-City at the 14 yard line.  Still unable to get their offense unraveled, the Wolves punted. Edgar Barrios got the ball and returned it to midfield.

4th Quarter
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the final 12 minutes began with a Colton Buzzard punt from the Coleman 45 to the C-City 13. Behind 21-12, the Wolves made it to midfield but failed to convert a 4th and 2 play thanks to Bluecat linebacker Stan Cole who made a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs.  The Bluecat offense failed to produce, resulting in another Buzzard punt to the C-City 21.  On the move, the Wolves racked up big yardage when White found Garza for a 45 yard completion. But, moments later, Coleman's Zach Doyle stepped in front of a White pass and returned the interception to the Coleman 38.  With 3:11 left in the game, Buzzard threw his third interception of the night, taken by C-City's Matt Sowa. That set up a C-City touchdown, a 28 yard slant pass to Garza with 2:54 remaining in the game. The PAT was true, making the score Coleman 21, C-City 19.  Working with no timeouts, the Wolves kicked to the Bluecats, an onside kick handled skillfully by Trent Hambright who wasted no time in scampering downfield to the C-City 29 yard line. Hambright's return set up the final Bluecat score of the game. It was a weird play to watch as no one touched Zach Doyle as he ran 29 yards for the touchdown. Not only was he untouched, the Wolves looked as if they didn't even attempt to stop him. Ah, but were the Wolves up to strategy? If they could block the extra point, score and get two points, they could tie the game. But they didn't block the extra point by Buzzard, the score was 28-19 and the chance for winning began to dim for C-City.  After two Barrios kickoffs out of bounds and an illegal procedure penalty, the Wolves took their final possession at their own 35. With 2:06 left in the game, they had moved to Coleman's 46. A pass to Garza on 3rd and long gave them another first down at the Coleman 31. With 1:06, the Wolves went for the score but a pass to Garza was incomplete in the end zone. Back to pass again, White was hit by Bluecat Adam Jimenez who jarred the ball loose. Carolos Barrios, big senior lineman, had his moment of glory as he scooped up the ball and rumbled his way to the C-City 35.   After that, the Cats simply snapped the ball twice, took a knee and called it a win, 28-19, leaving a large happy homecoming crowd ready to enjoy their weekend reunions.

Afterthoughts
It was a very physical game. From field level, there were lots of hard hits, no doubt plenty of sore players with plenty of bumps and bruises. But, losing a starting lineman and running back was not good. How long Crawford and Edington may miss wasn't known over the weekend. Hopefully, for the sake of these two fine young senior leaders, they'll be back in the fray soon.

Can you believe it? Non-district is history. It all counts starting this Friday night as the Bluecats return to Comanche for the first time in a long time. The Indians lost to Grape Creek 25-14 Friday night and are 0-4 to begin district.

District 8-2A Standings
Brady and Coleman are the only undefeated teams going into the district race. Early and Bangs are both 2-2, San Saba is 1-2, Dublin and Comanche winless. Brady had a very convincing win against Ozona and scored 72 points Friday night. Early easily handled Ballinger. The next several weeks won't be easy.

Bluecats Keep Record Clean For Homecoming
by Brett Autry
(colemanpaper.com - Monday, 22 September 2008)

The 2008 Homecoming game started off like gangbusters for the Coleman Bluecats Friday night at Hufford Field. Two quick scores in the first quarter gave many of the capacity crowd a false sense of security, as the Wolves clawed their way back into the ballgame.

Coleman received the opening kickoff and steadily drove the ball downfield with Stanley Cole getting the opening touchdown from three yards out at the 7:45 mark of the first. Colton Buzzard's boot was good and Coleman led 7-0.  The Bluecats tried a trick play, when Carlos Barrios onsides kicked the ensuing kickoff. Andrew Isom recovered the loose pigskin at the Colorado City 29. a 15-yard penalty moved the ball down to the 14.  Coleman carried the ball to the three for a 1st and goal. From that point, Glen Edington bulled his way into the end zone for the score. Buzzard's PAT was true and Coleman led 14-0, and the Wolves had yet to touch the ball.  The Wolves returned the Barrios kickoff to the Coleman 48, but a face mask penalty on the Cats took the ball deep into Bluecat territory at the 33. The Wolves managed to get the ball to the Bluecat 3, and faced a 4th and 2. The Cats held and took over on downs at their own 2.  A Bluecat interception, however, gave the Wolves great field position at the 11. Clint White then hit Manuel Garza on a touchdown pass. The PAT failed and the Bluecat lead was cut to 14-6 with 0:45 left in the first.

The Bluecats got the ball back at their 30, and quickly moved the ball downfield. Edington, Buzzard and Cole combined on runs to get the ball to the Colorado City 3-yard line. Who do you call when you need a 3-yard TD? You call on Glen Edington, who had his number called and dutifully scored his second 3-yard TD of the night. Buzzard's PAT was good and Coleman led 21-6 with 8:52 left in the half.  The teams exchanged punts, as tempers began to flare on the field. After the Bluecats had punted back to the Wolves, White hit Garza again for 26 yards to the Coleman 34. Then, with just 1:34 left in the half, White hit a well covered J.C. Johnson, who came up with the ball and raced to the end zone for their second TD of the night. The 2-point conversion failed and Coleman led at halftime 21-12.

Colorado received the second half kickoff and returned it to their own 33. Kyle Kemp ended the drive with an interception, setting the Bluecats up for business at the Wolves' 36. Coleman got down to the 4, but a sack caused the Bluecats to attempt a field goal. Buzzard's try was no good, and the score stood at 21-12.  The Wolves punted again to Coleman, and after a penalty had them pinned back at the 8, Zach Doyle broke loose for a 52-yard scamper. That joy didn't last long, as Buzzard threw an interception at the Colorado City 14. After a couple of punts were exchanged, Colorado City had the ball back, and driving. Doyle foiled that drive with an interception of White's pass deep in Bluecat territory and returned it to the Bluecat 38.

The Bluecats, however, returned the favor, when Buzzard tossed his third interception of the evening, with the Wolves taking over deep in Coleman's end of the field. Not wasting time, White connected with Garza again, this time on a 28-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good, and Coleman's lead was cut to 21-19 with 2:54 left in the game.  Colorado City tried an onside kick themselves, but with less favorable results. Trent Hambright gathered in the ball and raced to the Wolves' 29.  Doyle then, strangely, raced 29 yards untouched for the final touchdown of the night. Buzzard's PAT put the game out of reach, basically, at 28-19.  Colorado City, though, didn't quit. They drove down to the Bluecat 31 with 66 seconds left in the game. A pass fell incomplete in the end zone, and then on a second pass attempt, White was sacked by Adam Jimenez and fumbled. The ball was picked up by Barrios, and he raced to the Colorado City 35 before running out of room. From there the Cats simply ran out the clock for their fourth victory in a row.

The game was thought to be a hitting contest from the start. The hard play caused Coleman two injuries which could hurt their cause. Starting center Duston Crawford was hurt in the second quarter (knee), and Edington who missed the last two games also went down with a knee. They will be evaluated this week.  The Bluecats bein district play this Friday when they face old-time nemesis Comanche there. The Indians have not had the best year so far, losing last week to Grape Creek 25-14.  Zach Doyle had another huge night for the Bluecats, having 122 yards on 10 carries. The Bluecats ground game was dominant again, totaling 264 yards for the night.
