Coleman was able to begin District
play with a win, a BIG win, over the Comanche Indians Friday night. This Friday
the Cats are "Open" then, Dublin comes to town for the second District game on
October 10th.1st QUARTER Glen Edington took the opening kickoff and got to the 22 yard line. Stanley Cole gained 5 yards on the first play from scrimmage, then Colton Buzzard (pictured right) carried the ball 73 yards into the end-zone on the next play. With the Buzzard PAT good, the score was 7 - 0, Coleman ahead with 11:14 left in the 1st quarter. And, the night was still young! Comanche started their first possession on their own 16 yard line. Stanley Cole held the running back to a 1-yard gain. Cole (pictured below) was also in on the next tackle, allowing a gain of only 3 yards by the Comanche QB. On 3rd down, Cole and Caleb Walker held the running back to no gain, so on 4th and 4, Comanche was forced to punt the ball. Edington returned it to Comanche's 47 yard line. Salazar carried the ball to the 16 yard line on the first play of this series. Comanche's defense held Glen Edington to a 1-yard loss total on the next two plays, then a Buzzard pass to Dalton DeLeon carried him out of endzone, so it was incomplete. On 4th and 11 from the 17 yard line, Colton Buzzard's field goal attempt was wide right, so with 7:02 left in the 1st quarter, the score remained Coleman 7 - Comanche 0. Comanche's QB kept the ball on their first play of this possession for a 1-yard gain, then passed for a 1st down on the next play, getting the Indians to the 31 yard line. Comanche had a gain of 2 before calling a time out. A pass for another 1st down put the Indians on the Coleman 45 yard line. A run for 1-yard gain was stopped by Cole and Adam Jimenez. Jamal Agbor then stopped the next play behind the line of scrimmage, so with Comanche's next pass incomplete, and 3:48 left in the 1st quarter, the Indians punted again. Dalton DeLeon returned the ball to the 42 yard line, but a penalty against the Bluecats took them back to the 14 yard line. On 1st down, Edington got the ball out of bounds with a gain of 2 yards. Next play, Buzzard kept the ball for a 1st down to the 28 yard line. Then, a pass to DeLeon got another 1st down on the 41 yard line. Travis Brixey caught a Buzzard pass for another 1st down to Comanche's 45 yard line. Zach Doyle carried for another 1st down to the 32 yard line. Stanley Cole slipped on the turf at the 24 yard line, then with 1:42 left in 1st quarter, he carried the ball into the endzone for the Bluecat's second touchdown of the night. The PAT was good, so the score was Coleman 14 - Comanche 0. An onside kick by Coleman was covered by Comanche on their own 36 yard line. A 1-yard gain on the first play, then Gary Heath stopped the back for a loss of one yard. A pass was completed for a 1st down on their own 47 yard line. That play ended the 1st quarter with the score Coleman 14 - Comanche 0. 2nd QUARTER Comanche's QB gained 3 yards on the first play of this quarter, then the ball was carried down to Coleman's 5 yard line for an Indian 1st down. A QB keeper got the Indians to the 2 yard line. Then, on 2nd and goal, Comanche scored their first touchdown with 10:03 left in the 2nd quarter. The PAT was no good, so the score was Coleman 14 - Comanche 6. The onside kick by Comanche was covered by Anthony Beltran and Coleman started their next series on their own 37 yard line. Buzzard kept the ball and got close to a 1st down on the Cat's 46 1/2 yard line. Glen Edington then carried it to Comanche's 47 for a 1st down. Buzzard passed to Edington to the 34 yard line for another 1st down. A quick pass to Deleon was complete and then out of bounds for another 1st at the 21 yard line. Colton Buzzard then kept the ball and seeing daylight, ran into the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the night. With the PAT by Buzzard blocked the score was Coleman 20 - Comanche 6 with 9:01 left in 2nd quarter. Comanche took the ensuing kickoff to their own 43 yard line. Their second play was a completed pass to Coleman's 20 yard line for a 1st down. On 3rd and 4 they had another completed pass for a 1st down to the 4 yard line. With 1st and goal, Stanley Cole got through their line and stopped them for a 1-yard loss. They had no gain on 2nd down, and a 3rd down pass into the endzone was incomplete. On 4th and goal from the 5 yard line, the Bluecat defense held the QB out of the endzone, just 6 inches short of a touchdown, so Coleman took over the ball on downs. With the ball less than a yard out of the endzone, QB Buzzard kept the ball for a 5 yard gain. Then, his pass to Dalton DeLeon was intercepted by Comanche and run back to the Coleman 43 yard line for their next possession. A completed pass gave Comanche a 1st down on the Cats' 22 yard line. Andrew Isom and Adam Jimenez stopped the Indians for a 1-yard loss, so Comanche had 2nd and 11 with 3:55 left in half. A pass was complete just short of a 1st down, and then Cole stopped them for a 1-yard loss. On 4th and 2 from the 13 yard line, a fumbled snap kept Comanche from making any yardage. Coleman again took over the ball on downs inside their own 20. With 1st down on the 16 yard line and 2:14 left in 2nd quarter, the Cats got to the 22 yard line. Then a Buzzard pass to DeLeon was complete to the 35 for another 1st down. Travis Brixey then received Buzzard's throw and got to the 45 yard line just shy of a 1st down. A pass to Glen Edington just out of his reach fell incomplete, and the Cats were sitting at 3rd down with about a foot to go for a 1st. Colton carried the ball to the 50 yard line for that 1st down with 1:01 left in the half. A quick pass out to DeLeon was complete and he was tackled after a 7 yard gain; however a penalty against Coleman took them back 15 yards. With 1st and 25, Buzzard scrambled and got to the 48 yard line making it 2nd and 12 with 0:41 on the clock. A pass to Dalton DeLeon was complete and he ran out of bounds at the 1st down marker, for 3rd and about 1 foot on Comanche's 40 yard line. Kahlam Salazar carried the ball and gained enough for a 1st down. Buzzard then kept for the ball and gained a 1st down to the 22 yard line. With a "2-minute offense" in gear, Edington got the call and gained 5 yards to the 17 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon and he was able to get out of bounds at the 6 yard line to stop the clock with 6 seconds left in the half. Comanche's timeout didn't keep the Cats from scoring, though. Buzzard completed a pass to DeLeon for another touchdown with 2 seconds to spare. The Bluecats went for 2 and another pass to DeLeon was complete for 2 points giving the Bluecats a 28 - 6 lead going into halftime. 3rd QUARTER Comanche received the kickoff and was able to return to the 40 yard line, where Daniel Vasquez made the tackle. Running the option, the Comanche QB pitchout took the back out of bounds for a short gain, 2nd and 6 from the 44 yard line. Stanley Cole stopped the next runner for a 1-yard gain. On an incomplete pass, a defensive interference call moved the ball to Coleman's 43 yard line for a 1st down. Agbor and Jonathon Sanchez stopped the Indians behind the line of scrimmage for a 1-yard loss. A completed pass got the Indians to Coleman's 28 yard line and a 1st down. A run on their next play was taken down for only a 1-yard gain. The Comanche QB was pushed out of bounds at the 19 yard line. Comanche got a 1st down, then Edington tackled Comanche at the 12 yard line. Their next play gave them a 1st down at Coleman's 5 yard line. Then, the Indians were able to get just short of the goal line, giving them 2nd and goal about a foot out. On next play they lost another foot, so they had 3rd and about 2 feet to go for a TD. Stopped again by the Cat defense gave them 4th down. Comanche tried one more time, but the Bluecat Defense stopped the Indians just short of the endzone with 5:33 left in the 3rd quarter. Coleman took over the ball inside the 1 yard line for the 2nd time that night, and after a 2 yard run, Colton Buzzard passed to Dalton DeLeon near the 30 yard line. DeLeon caught the ball beyond the defenders and ran into the endzone for a touchdown - a 98 yard touchdown pass! With the PAT good, the score was Coleman 35 - Comanche 6 with 4:48 left in the 3rd quarter. Coleman's euphoria was quickly squelched when Comanche ran the ensuing kickoff 84 yards back for a touchdown. With their PAT not good, the score was Coleman 35 - Comanche 12 with 4:33 left in the 3rd quarter. Coleman started this possession on their own 28 yard line. Kahlam Salazar ran for 6 yards, then Doyle got a 1st down to the 43 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon and he was taken down at the Comanche 49. On an option Buzzard pitched to Doyle who ran for a 1st down to the 35 yard line. Then Doyle ran for a short gain to the 31. On 3rd down, Salazar (pictured right) carried the ball to the 20 yard line for 1st down. An offsides penalty against Comanche gave Coleman 5 yards for 1st and 5 from the 15 yard line. A reverse to DeLeon made for a 1-yard loss. The Cats let the clock run out ending the 3rd Quarter at Coleman 35 - Comanche 12. 4th QUARTER On the first play of the 4th quarter Buzzard passed to Salazar wide open in the endzone for a touchdown. The PAT was not good so the score was Coleman 41 - Comanche 12 with 11:53 in the 4th quarter. Comanche returned the kickoff to the 33 yard line. An incomplete pass and a 2-yard gain gave them 3rd and 8. Another incomplete pass made it 4th and 8, so Comanche was forced to punt. The ball was returned by Buzzard to the 38 yard line, a penalty for "holding" moved the ball back to the 26 yard line. Salazar carried the ball on 1st down for a 4-yard gain. Jonathon Sanchez (pictured left) then received the handoff and got to the 41 yard line for another 1st down. Sanchez again received the handoff and ran for 7 yards, then again ran for a 1st down to the 26 yard line. Doyle carried the ball to the 11 yard line for another 1st down, then ran again for a gain of 3 yards. With 2nd and 7 from the 8, a pass to Trent Hambright put the Cats on the 6 yard line. On 3rd down Jonathon Sanchez carried the ball into the endzone with 6:50 left in the game. With the PAT by Buzzard good, the score was Coleman 48 - Comanche 12. Comanche started their next short-lived possession on their own 45 yard line. A fumble on their next play was recovered by Stanley Cole who picked it up and ran to the Comanche 34 yard line. Sanchez then received the handoff from Zach Doyle, quarterback, and escaped several near-tackles to get to the 1 yard line. After a Comanche timeout, with 1st and goal from the 1, Doyle kept the ball and ran for a touchdown. With the PAT by Buzzard good, the score was Coleman 55 - Comanch 12 with 6:00 left in the game. Comanche started this drive on their own 39 yard line. The Indians had an incomplete pass, then K.C. Hale tackled Comanche on Coleman's 45 yard line, but not before the got a 1st down. Their next run was for another 1st down to the 33 yard line. An incomplete pass, then an 8 yard run made it 3rd and 2. A pass was completed to the 5 yard line, then on their 2nd down play, Comanche was able to score a touchdown. With the PAT good, the score was Coleman 55 - Comanche 19 with 3:53 left in the game. Coleman returned the kick to the 38 yard line. Sanchez carried the ball to the 46, then Britt Bartell got a 1st down on the Comanche 45 yard line. An illegal procedure call against the Bluecats made it 1st and 15. Doyle kept the ball for a 2-yard gain. Doyle then kept it again, but fumbled giving Comanche possession on the 38 yard line. However, on their first play, Edington intercepted a pass and gave Coleman the ball back on the 32 yard line. Jonathon Sanchez ran 12 yards to the 20 for a 1st down. Sanchez then gained 16 more yards to the 4 yard line with 1:31 in the game. A QB keeper by Doyle made 1 yard, then illegal procedure took the Cats back to the 8 yard line. Doyle (pictured right) then ran the ball into the endzone for his second rushing TD of the night. With 0:24 seconds on the clock, the PAT was good so the score was Coleman 62 - Comanche 19. Comanche allowed the clock to run down on their next possession leaving the score Coleman 62 - Comanche 19. WAY TO GO BLUECATS !!!
Big Plays, Big Defensive Stands Give Cats A Win Over Indians
(Coleman Chronicle and Democrat-Voice, Coleman, Texas, September 30, 2008.) The
Coleman Bluecats used an offensive avalanche and a stubborn defense to
overwhelm and dismantle the Comanche Indians Friday night in Comanche.
The game was the district opener for both teams, and Coleman kept its
winning streak alive with a 62-19 pounding of their rival.
Coleman's first score gave those in attendance a clue to what was in
store for the rest of the night. Coleman had received the opening
kickoff and set up play at their own 22. After a 5-yard gain, Colton
Buzzard was off to the races, carrying the leather 73 yards to paydirt.
Buzzard's PAT was also good, and the score was 7-0, with just 46
seconds gone in the game. Coleman's defense was stout, with
Stanley Cole leading the way, and held the Indians to a 3-and-out
forcing a punt which Edington returned to the Comanche 47. Salazar
raced 31 yards to put the Cats in good field position, but the Indian
defense stiffened and forced a field goal try, which was wide right at
the 7:00 mark of the first. The Indians dodged a bullet and only
trailed 7-0. The Indians managed a small drive, getting two first
downs, and into Coleman territory before outstanding defensive play
forced another punt.
The Bluecats then began an 86-yard drive, highlighted by Buzzard passes to Dalton DeLeon and Travis Brixey for first downs. With 1:24 left in the quarter Cole scampered 24 yards for the second TD of the night. Buzzard's PAT was good for a 14-0 lead. Comanche made it much closer their next possession. They recovered an onsides kick at their own 36, and drove down the field, aided mainly a 45-yard run down to the Cat 5. Two plays later the Indians scored on a 2-yard run. They missed the PAT and trailed 14-6. The Indians then tried an onsides kick themselves, with the same result. Beltran recovered at the Bluecat 37. Coleman ran for two quick first downs, and then passed for two more, getting the ball down to the 21. Buzzard then called his own number and took off on a 21-yard run for his second TD of the night. The PAT was blocked and Coleman led 20-6 with 9:00 left in the half. Perhaps the biggest series of the night happened next. Comanche got the kickoff back to their own 43. Four plays later they were down to the Cat 4 with a first down. The Bluecat defense then made a goal line stand that should make anyone proud. Cole and Co. held the Indians out, and on 4th and goal, stopped the Indian QB just inches short of the goal line and took over on downs. But Coleman gave the ball right back two plays later when Buzzard tossed an interception, which was returned to the Cat 43. Comanche then completed a pass down to the Cat 20, and were once again knocking on the door. But the Cat defense stood strong, with Andrew Isom, Adam Jimenez, and Cole stopping them cold and taking over on downs at the 16. With just 2:14 left in the half, the Bluecats went into their version of the two-minute offense. Using passes and runs, the Cats reeled off 12 plays (that's right 12!!!) getting to the 6-yard line with :06 left in the half. Buzzard calmly hit DeLeon for the TD and then hit him again with the two-point conversion for a 28-6 lead at the half. The first drive of the second half for the Indians was the backbreaker, and saw a 14-point swing in favor of the Bluecats. Comanche got the kickoff and steadily drove down the field despite tackles for loss by Agbor and Sanchez. Once again the Indians were at the Bluecats door, knocking away at the 5 with a first down. They faced 2nd and goal from less than a yard away, but were stopped. They faced 3rd and goal from less than a yard away, but were stopped. The faced 4th and goal from less than a yard away, but were stopped. Kudos to the Bluecat defense, who up until point had withstood two goal line stands. The backbreaker came two plays later, when the Cats (after getting the ball on downs at their own 1) faced a second and 8 at their own 3. Buzzard took care of that dilemma by hitting DeLeon in stride and then watching him speed 97 yards to paydirt! The PAT was good and Coleman led 35-6. The Indians, though, threw cold water on Coleman's celebrations when they returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for their second TD of the night. This PAT also failed and the score stood at 35-12. Coleman then took over at their own 28 after the kickoff. Using the running legs of Zach Doyle and Kahlan Salazar, the Bluecats marched to the Indian 16, where Buzzard hit Salazar for a 16-yard TD pass. The PAT failed and Coleman led 41-12 with 11:53 left in the fourth. After forcing Comanche to punt, the Cats once again used their strong running game to march downfield. After Doyle, Salazar and Sanchez moved the ball to the 8, Hambright caught a short pass to the 6. On the next play Jonathan Sanchez bulled into the end zone for the score. The PAT was good for a 48-12 lead. Comanche fumbled on their first play after the kickoff with Cole recovering and returning the ball to the Indian 34. Doyle came in to relieve Buzzard at quarterback, and on his first handoff, Sanchez made a great run down to the Comanche 1. Doyle then called his own number and scored from the 1, and with the good PAT the score read 55-12 with 6:00 left in the game. Comanche used a good combination of runs and passes their next possession and moved the ball down to the Coleman 5. QB Jerick Roberts then called his own number and scored from the 5. The PAT was good and Comanche trailed 55-19. Coleman fumbled the ball, with Comanche recovering their next time with the ball, but on the Indians first play Edington recorded an interception giving the Cats the ball back at the Comanche 32. Sanchez ran for 12 and 16 yards to get the ball near the end zone. After a penalty, Doyle called his own number once more and scored from 6-yards out for the final TD of the evening. The PAT was good for the final 62-19 score. Coleman’s offense exploded for an astonishing 685 total yards, including 456 yards on the ground. Buzzard led the offense with 229 yards passing on 13 of 16 attempts for three touchdowns. He also rushed for a team high 145 yards and two touchdowns. For the second time in three games, the “dynamic duo” of Buzzard and DeLeon hooked up for a 97-yard touchdown pass. They accomplished the feat two weeks previously in the Hawley game. How many quarterback/receiver duos can make that claim?
