Coleman, Texas |
by Ralph Terry The first mention of football in Coleman was in the year 1898, when we find the Coleman Town Team playing Daniel Baker College in Brownwood ... Coleman won that game 72 to 0. It appears that this town team had nothing to do with Coleman High School, except the possibity that some of the team members were students at CHS. We later find other town football teams in Coleman, some playing the Coleman High School team. I will give the schedule played by CHS, with scores (team played, CHS' score, and the score of the opponent); home (H) or away (T) game; district game (D); homecoming game (*); a list of players with any information that I might have for each of them; and any interesting information about games or teams for each year. Keep in mind that the rules have changed a GREAT deal over the years, as has the equipment and training of the players. At first, the coach was not a coach, but primarily a manager who set up games and got the players to those games. The players themselves were responsible for most of their training and coaching, as we know it today. A football "Sponsor" was similar to the Football Sweetheat of later years, and our current Homecoming Queen. Some players names may be followed by a question mark (?) - this indicates that there is some question as to whether that person was a member of the team or not. This discrepancy is due to information coming from different sources and being unable to confirm or deny either. Few records were kept on the early teams and in some cases a man might be suited out, but played very little, and therefore was not considered to be a full member of the team. Spelling of players names is as they were found in various sources and could be inaccurate. If a player is listed only as All District indicates being on the lst team, whereas 2nd team and honorable mention status is shown. Abbreviations used are somewhat standard and are given here: D or Def = Defensive (when used with a player)
