George W. Brewer (December
19, 1849 in Sneedville, Hancock County,
Tennessee-March 6, 1900) married Lucinda
Seal, (March 8, 1856-August 9, 1940),
daughter of Orville and Mary Elizabeth
"'Betty" (Green) Seal. They had
eleven children: (1) Mattie E., August 10,
1873-September 11, 1876; (2) Samuel,
August 11, 1875-January 8, 1878; (3)
Plesant B., August 18, 1877; (4) Robert
Woodson, January 9, 1880-July 23, 1941,
buried at El Paso; (5) Mitchel, May 15,
1882-1900; (6) Clemmie E., September 2,
1884-February 21, 1885; (7) Mary
Elizabeth, January 12, 1886; (8) William
L., August 4, 1888-May 22, 1912; (9)
Bessie Birdie, April 13, 1891-May 20,
1981; (10) Francis "Frank'' Marrian,
February 16, 1894 in Collin County-March
27, 1980, buried in Coleman, married (1)
Laura Lincoln about 1918. Laura died
January 5, 1970. Frank married (2)
Nannie Gertrude Hipsher, May 26, 1973 (see
Fechner); (11) Ora "Zella," July 25,
1897 in Sanger.
Robert Woodson
came to Coleman from Denton in 1905,
married Addie Lee Stoup in Cook County in
1898, January 3, 1882 - February 26, 1954,
buried in El Paso, the daughter of Alvie
Curtis Stoup. He worked for John
Rogers Gin in Coleman and during the
harvest season each summer, he operated a
threshing machine in the county.
They had eight children: (1) Alvie Curtis,
December 31, 1900 in Sanger - December 1,
1981, buried in Coleman; (2) Charlie, born
and died in 1902; (3) Edna Maybelle,
December 31, 1904; (4) Beulah "Babe,"
January 2, 1907 - March 2, 1934, buried in
El Paso; (5) Joe Douglas, June 15, 1909;
(6) Virginia Rose, February 2, 1912-
October 4, 1977, buried in El Paso; (7)
Bobbie Lee, May 20, 1918; (8) Dolly Faye,
March 24, 1921.
Alvie Curtis was
five years old when he came to
Coleman. At sixteen, he started work
at Rogers Gin, helped his father with the
threshing, and later worked as a mechanic
in several garages in Coleman. On
January 15, 1921, he married Jessie Lee
Johnson, born September 14, 1903, the
daughter of Russell Aubrey and Debbie
(Kelley) Johnson. Russell is a
brother to Sarah Edith Taylor. (See
Taylor Family). In 1930, he
began work at the Coleman City Power
Plant, working there until 1952, when they
moved to Sonora where he was Chief
Engineer of the City Power Plant.
When he retired in 1963, they returned to
their home in Coleman, where Jessie Lee
still lives. He had a little shop
behind their home where he repaired and
worked on motors. This was more a
hobby than work for him, for he was one
that had to be doing something. They
had five children, all born and raised in
Coleman. They are:
(1)
Twin boy (unnamed), born August 30, 1922,
died in infancy;
(2)
Aubrey Woodson (twin), August 30, 1922,
attended Coleman Schools, graduated from
Coleman High School in May, 1942, went
into the Army in October, 1942, and was
discharged in 1945. Aubrey married (1)
Marie Cox, September 20, 1947. (See
Benjamin Floyd Cox). They had three
children:
(2a) Debra Marie, December 29, 1948,
married Ronald Warren Draper, January 20,
1968. Two children: Ronald Warren, Jr.,
August 5, 1968 and Jacquelyn, July 11,
1969, live in Fort Worth.
(2b) Ben Curtis, June 7, 1951, married
Pamela Sue Lucas, November 4, 1982 in
Michigan. They are expecting their
first child in December, 1983, live in
Fort Worth.
(2c) Christy (Chris) Lee, November 24,
1953, not married and lives in Austin.
Aubrey started
working for Grammers Department Stores in
Coleman and Santa Anna in 1945, working
about twelve years for them. They
moved to Fort Worth in 1956, where he
managed a shoe store. In 1966,
Aubrey and Chris moved to Austin, where he
owns and manages two children's shoe
stores. On June 20, 1978, Aubrey
married (2) Tammie Doan. She had two
daughters, Megan Renee and Monica Sue;
(3) Sarah Louise,
June 18, 1924, married (1) Robert Wayne
Wetzel, June 17, 1941 in Brady. He
was a tail gunner in World War II and was
killed in action in April, 1945.
They had one son, Robert (Bob) Wayne,
August 21, 1945. In April, 1946, she
married (2) Francis Wiley Gillespie of
Coleman, who died in May, 1965, buried in
Coleman. They had one son, Joe
Wiley, February 27, 1948. Wiley
adopted Bob after he and Louise
married. Louise married (3) E. W.
"Dub' Brown from Burkett, May 17, 1968 and
on July 29, 1983, she married (4) Fred
McCleskey in Abilene, formerly of
Coleman. Bob graduated from Coleman
High School in May, 1963, and received a
Bachelor of Business Administration Degree
from Angelo State University in 1968, then
went to work for Treanor Equipment Company
in Abilene, where he is now Field Service
Manager. Bob and Joy have one daughter,
Robin Louise, March 12, 1964, a student at
Angelo State. They live in Clyde. (See
John R. Wells). Joe Wiley
graduated from Coleman High in May 1966,
where he was active in sports. He
went to McMurry on an athletic scholarship
and played football for the Indians,
winning many honors. He graduated
with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
1971. He received a Doctoral Degree
in Education from Texas A & M, May 6,
1983, and teaches in the Physical
Education Department at Tarleton State
University. He married Cathey Lynn
Sayles, August 2, 1969, in Coleman in the
Methodist Church. (See Albert H. Le
May). They have two children:
Joseph Wiley, May 3, 1971, and Jennifer
Lynn, April 6, 1976;
(4) Wanda Lou,
January 28, 1926, married (1) Gilbert
(Son) Curtis Allison in Pampa, January 2,
1944. Son died August 21, 1975,
buried in Sonora. They lived and
raised two sons in Sonora: (4a) Gilbert
"Gil"' Curtis, July 22, 1946, graduated
from Sonora High School in 1964, attended
Angelo State, where he received a Bachelor
of Business Administration Degree in 1970,
and served two years in the Air
Force. He started work with the
State of Texas in 1973, and is now
Director of Quality Assurance at Vernon
State Hospital in Vernon. He
received his Masters Degree from Abilene
Christian University in 1979. He
married Betty June Freeland, September 2,
1967, in San Angelo. Three children:
Laura Elizabeth, September 21, 1968, Karen
Patricia, April 8, 1971, and Christopher
Curtis, January 9, 1975. (4b) Timothy
Wade, January 10, 1952, graduated from
Sonora High School in 1970 and was
attending Angelo State when he was killed
in an automobile accident, January 27,
1975, buried in Sonora. Tim was not
married. Wanda married (2) Lloyd
Henry Ainsworth. They lived in Iraan
until he retired, then moved to Coleman
where they now reside;
(5) Billie Ruth,
November 18, 1927, graduated from Coleman
High School in May, 1946. After
working a couple of years, she married Max
Henry Horne, May 28, 1948, in the First
Baptist Church parsonage in Coleman.
