Asa Meadows Britton was born
September 27, 1879 in Jefferson, Texas,
the son of John W. Britton, February 23,
1845 - 1885, and Maria E. Meadows, July
22, 1842 - 1885. John W. was born in
Rockford, Coosa County, Alabama, and Maria
E. Meadows was born in Alabama, both died
in Ft. Worth, buried there in East Oakwood
Cemetery. The family moved from
Jefferson to Fort Worth when Asa was a
very small child and after the death of
his parents, he was cared for by an older
sister, Lucy, until her marriage. He
then lived with an uncle and aunt, William
Love James, September 9, 1854-September
13, 1930, and Florence Annie Meadows,
February 2, 1851-February 8, 1904, both
buried in Coleman. Asa joined this
uncle and aunt in Coleman County about
1887, where he attended school at Spring
Creek and New Castle. They later
moved to Tom Green and Bell
Counties. In Bell County he attended
Salado College. He worked for Santa
Fe Railroad in Temple and later moved back
to Coleman County, where he bought land at
the foot of Bead Mountain. He also
bought land on the Concho.
On December 13,
1908, he and Carrie Eugenia James were
married in Home Creek church by W. T.
Tabor of Burkett. Carrie was the
daughter of Thomas Franklin James and
Elizabeth (Belle) Bridges (see W. F.
James and Joe James Families).
After the wedding, carrying a picnic lunch
that was prepared by Carrie's mother, they
stopped at the Bowen Crossing on Hords
Creek for lunch. They were on their
way to the Wm. L. James farm at Coleman
Junction, where they lived for a short
while until they could get possession of
their farm at Bead Mountain as it had been
leased out. Their children were born
at Bead Mountain: Marion Culberson, born
November 4, 1909, and Marie Elizabeth,
March 31, 1911. The family later bought
land and moved to the Home Creek Community
where the children attended school for a
brief period. During the 1918 drought,
they moved to Karnes County, where they
resided until their children had finished
high school at Kenedy. Marion (M.C.)
attended Texas A & I at Kingsville and
later worked for Humble Oil and Refining
Co. Marie attended Port Arthur
College, and later worked for the Post
Office Department at Aransas Pass.
Asa and Carrie returned to Coleman County
near the head of Home Creek about 1935.
After serving in
World War II, M. C. settled in San
Antonio. He and Mary Dell Thurston
were married June 5, 1946, and still
reside there. Marie returned to
Coleman County after retiring from the
post office in 1966 and lives in Valera.
Asa M. Britton
died May 26, 1963, and Carrie E., February
5, 1972, both buried in Valera.
