James (Jas.) M. Brown was
born February 2, 1846 in Alabama, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Miller Brown,
married Nancy Ann Huey, born July 28, 1845
in Alabama. Nancy Ann was a sister
to John M. Huey, and Jas. M. was a brother
to Una (Brown) Huey (see James Walter
Huey). Jas. M. was a veteran
of the Civil War. They came to
Coleman County from Grandview, Johnson
County, Texas, in 1897-1898 and settled
between Spring Creek and Home Creek
(between the Talpa and Valera old road to
Coleman). He was a farmer.
Jas. M. died September 1, 1914 and Nancy
Ann (Nannie) August 27, 1929, both buried
at Talpa. They had nine children,
all born in Mississippi. They are:
(1) Emma, died at age
21, buried at Grandview.
(2) Charles E.,
December, 1870-1927, married Sallie J.
Williams, May 26, 1872 - August 7, 1964,
daughter of Steve and Elizabeth (Fulton)
Williams, both buried at Talpa.
Charlie came to Coleman County in 1898 to
visit his parents and family and see if he
could find a teaching position here; which
he did at Spring Creek. He rented a
house from Mr. Cusenbary near the school
(now belongs to Onie Bouldin) and sent for
his wife and their then two
children. My father also taught at
Shady Grove, Talpa and Mud Creek.
They bought a farm east of Talpa and he
also farmed. They had ten children:

Anne Dial, born August 11, 1896 in
Grandview, married T. Wesley Bomar,
February 22, 1891-June 28, 1965, on
November 21, 1915, buried at Talpa (see
Bomar Family). Children:
(1) Charles Thomas (Tom), November 26,
1916, married Donie May Herring, the
daughter of August and Eva (Brookshier)
Herring of Talpa. August and Andy C. are
brothers (see Andy C. Herring).
Children: Rex, Jimmy, Joyce, Pat, Gary and
Vicki. Tom and Donie now live at
Ballinger.
(2) James Wesley, September 10, 1920,
married Dorothy Boatright of Miles, the
daughter of Sparks and Katie (Tucker)
Boatright. Children: a son, Jamie,
and four daughters, Sharon, Melanie, Kathy
and Patti. They live in Winters.
(3) Weldon Lee "Scooter," September 1,
1925, married Sue Preas of Novice.
Children: Barbara, Lee, Stevie and
Kenny. They live at Fort Worth.
(4) Bobby Gene, January 19, 1932, married
Lanelle Sutton of Snyder. Children:
Rodney, Jimmy and Dena. They live at
Cisco.
(5) Elizabeth Ann (Dot), August 2, 1937,
married Berry Schroeder of Lowake, now
deceased. Children: Eric and Julie,
live in Ballinger. The Bomar
children attended Talpa School. Wes
had the Gulf Distributorship and station
in Talpa for many years. Anne Dial
had a restaurant at one time and worked in
the Talpa-Centennial High School lunchroom
for ten years, retiring in 1967. She
now lives in Ballinger.

Stephen E. (Steve), April 21, 1898 in
Grandview-June 23, 1975, buried in
Coleman, married Helen Davenport, daughter
of Rollin and Lollie B. (Ballard)
Davenport, on January 8, 1932. Helen
taught school at Talpa and Valera, now
retired and lives in Coleman. Steve worked
in the bank at Valera and retired from the
Coleman Bank in the early 1970's.
They had two sons:
(1) Steve Ronnie, January 18, 1933 in
Brownwood, graduated from Coleman High
School, Baylor University and Southwest
School of Banking at Southern Methodist
University. He is chairman of the
Republic Bank Houston and manager-director
of the Republic Holding Corporation and
lives in Houston. Has two boys,
Jimmy and David;
(2) Larry Bob, September 13, 1943 in
Coleman, graduated from Coleman High and
Oklahoma State University at
Stillwater. He is an electrical
engineer for Texas Instruments and lives
in Dallas. Has two children, Chad
and Marcie.
(2c) Bessie E.,
born at Talpa, and retired in 1966 from
the lunchroom at high school in Talpa.
(2d) James
Miller (Jim), July 3, 1903 at Talpa-June
17, 1983, buried Talpa married Claudine
Bouldin, the daughter of Leonard G. and
Dora O. (Utton) Bouldin of Talpa.
They had two sons:
(1)
Lynn, born April 13, 1939, graduated from
Talpa and married Janice Lee, born August
2, 1941, the daughter of Doyle and Jenny
Margaret (Schwartz) Lee. Janice also
graduated from Talpa. Children:
Rodney, February 12, 1958, Lecia, February
24, 1962 and Angie, June 10, 1964. They
now live in Abilene where Lynn works for
the post office, Claudine now lives in
Santa Anna.
(2) Ned, November 26, 1940 in
Coleman-April 8, 1982 in Fredericksburg,
buried Talpa, graduated from Talpa,
Draughn's Business College and the
American Institute of Banking. Ned
married Mary Sue Thompson in Ballinger,
the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Carroll
Thompson. Two children: Robin and
Kyle. He was president of the First
State Bank in Harper at the time of his
death.

Charles E. (Jake) Jr., September 17, 1904
- September 20, 1963, married Lynnette
Spreen, August 30, 1913-December 19, 1957,
both buried at Ballinger, the daughter of
Robert and Dora (Greenwood) Spreen of
Runnels County. One daughter,
Judy.
(2f)
Joseph W. (Joe) in 1907 at Talpa, married
Ella Pitts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D.
Pitts of Talpa. (Mrs. Pitts was a
Snow). Children: Shirley, Betty,
Pete, Doreen, Jay, Judy and Becky (the
last three triplets, born at Coleman
Hospital). Joe and Ella had lived in
the Talpa area since their marriage, moved
to the Dallas area in November, 1983.
(2g) Mabel
Modena, born at Talpa, married Grover
Lightfoot of Coleman, both are deceased.
One son, Grover William "Chip' lives in
San Angelo.

Ruth, May 13, 1913 - September 7, 1963 in
San Angelo, buried in Coleman, married
James (Jimmy) Stovall. One daughter,
Sallie (See Stovall Family).

Bobbie, born born at Talpa, married Walter
(Pat) Seals of Coleman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. P. Seals. (See William Alford
Irby). Pat passed away
December 13, 1980, buried in Coleman.
(3) Robert W.
(Bob), October 20, 1872 - December 26,
1933, buried Talpa, never married.
He had a grocery store in Talpa several
years.
(4) Wesley F., October
22, 1874- August 26, 1952, buried Talpa,
never married.
(5) Mattie E.,
September 26, 1877-September 8, 1948,
buried Talpa never married.
(6) Ada Modena,
October 9, 1879 - July 10, 1979, buried
Talpa, never married.
(7) Jasper Miller,
November 11, 1881-November 21, 1970,
married May Webb, October 16, 1884-January
3, 1959, both buried Talpa. (See
William Henry Webb). They lived all
their married life in the Talpa area.
Children:
(7a) Paralee,
July 26, 1906 - March 16, 1979, married
Earl Authur. (See Authur
Family).
(7b) Roy,
February 5, 1908-1961, married Frankie
Trauber, the daughter of James F. and May
Belle (Payne) Trauber of Talpa. Both
are deceased and buried in Abilene.
Children:
(1) Roy Jr., deceased, and his wife, Leta,
had four children, Billy Caroline and
Debby. Roy was a consignee for an
oil company in Abilene.
(2) Jean married Gene Dawson, lives in
Abilene, where he works for an oil
company, no children.
(3) Patsy married Don Revell, two
daughters, Lori and Sheri. They live in
San Angelo where Don is District Manager
of West Texas Utilities.
(4) Jerry Don lives in Artesia, New
Mexico, where he is a coach and
teacher. He and his wife, Mary have
four children; Jerry, Randy, Judi and
Bill.
(7c) Thelma
(1910) married Alvin Hudgins, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Perry D. Hudgins, November 20,
1933. They have two sons: (1) Roger
married Patsy Sikes. (See Sikes
Family). (2) Dean and his
wife, Janice and daughter, Allison, live
in San Angelo, he teaches school at Wall.
(7d) Ralph E.,
March 23, 1911 - December 29, 1983, buried
Talpa, married Marie Wiegreffe, August 15,
1934 in Coleman. (See Charles Barton
Black). Ralph was commissioner
of Precinct 4 for twenty years.
Marie is a nurse. They raised their
family at Talpa and their children
graduated from Talpa and
Talpa-Centennial. They are:
(1) Sybil, born July 28, 1937, married
Gary Sanderford. Two sons: Kelly,
who attends Baylor University, and Max,
who is in high school in San Angelo.
Sybil is a registered nurse and
teacher. Gary taught and coached at
Mozelle. They both teach school in
San Angelo, where they now live.
(2) Eddie, July 18, 1939, married Billie
Selby of Ballinger. Children:
(a) Debra, married
Robbie Bryan. She has a five-year-old
daughter.,
(b) Bill, not married,
works in Ballinger. Billie is a
nurse and Eddie has a barber shop in
Ballinger. They all live in
Ballinger.
(3) Randall E., June 9, 1941-February 26,
1972, graduated from Sul Ross and taught
school several years.
(4)
Kent, August 22, 1943, married Brenda
Faubion of Grews. Two children:
Jana, lives in San Angelo and attends
college, and Sammy. They
divorced, Kent is now married to
Sherry Rhodes and lives in San Angelo
employed by San Angelo Pipe and
Supply.
(5) Larry W., July 13, 1945 - November 21,
1975, lived at Talpa with his
parents. He worked in the oil
fields. Both he and Randall are
buried at Talpa. Marie now lives in
San Angelo.

James Irvin, September 11, 1912 - March 8,
1965, buried Talpa, married Mary Irene
Bradford, born October 31, 1916, the
daughter of Rube and Mary Frances
"Frankie" (Partridge) Bradford (see
John L. Jones). Children:
(1) Jimmy Gaines, married
Gale Kirk, daughter of Billy Major and
Amelia M. (Roesner) Kirk, Sr., live in
Abilene.
(2) Mickey.
(3) Deana-they attended
school at Talpa and Talpa-Centennial.
(7f) Azalee,
May 5, 1914, married Bill Duncan of
Ballinger. Children:
(1) Franklin, married (1)
Donna Kelly from San Angelo, two
children. He is chaplain in a
hospital in Athens, Georgia.
(2) Phil is a lawyer, married and lives in
Los Angeles, California. Bill is
deceased, buried in Ballinger.
Azalee now lives in Athens.
(7g) Oscar,
October 3, 1916-1967, buried in Winters,
married Betty Eckert, who lives in
Winters. No children.
(7h) Winston
Perry "Skinny," March 5, 1918 -January 11,
1963, buried Talpa, was in the army in
World War II. Children: Billy Mac
and Regina.
(8) Maggie L.,
December 31, 1883-May 5, 1958, married
William T. Gregory, March 22, 1881 in
Putnam, Tennessee-September 13, 1958, both
buried Talpa, on September 7, 1902.
He came to Coleman County in 1898.
They had a mercantile store in Talpa a
number of years. Children:
(8a) Marie A., (1904) married George
Bevill, lives at Brownwood.
(8b)
Curtiss M., January 8, 1905-September 30,
1970, buried never married. Curtiss
taught school at Talpa, Rockwood and
Ballinger. (8c) Jefferson M.
(Jelly), July 7, 1909-July 10, 1978,
married Itha Churchill, August 11, 1916 at
Brownwood-July 4, 1981 in Abilene, both
buried in Abilene, the daughter of Sidney
and Lorine (Nuckles) Churchill, on June
16, 1934 in Coleman. They had two
children: Nixie (Youngblood) lives in
Oklahoma, and Sidney T. (Sid), lives in
Abilene. Mr. and Mrs. Churchill lived in
Valera at one time, and Coleman, both
buried in Coleman. He is a brother
to Pearl (Churchill) Sparkman (see
Sparkman Family). Jeff was
retired from Haliburton Company.
(8d) Jessie married Coy O. Nalley, son of
T.O and Virginia (Garrett) Nalley of
Coleman County. One daughter,
Janice. They later moved to Big
Spring, where Coy was a partner in
Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home. Coy is
deceased and Jessie still lives in Big
Spring.

(8f) Modena E., March 29, 1924-February
16, 1935, buried Talpa.
(9) Arthur A., August
28, 1886-August 27, 1958, married Lonie E.
(Trapp) Lopez, May 22 1897 in New
Braunfels-September 17, 1976 in Coleman,
both buried at Talpa, daughter of Carr D.
and Amelia (Correllius) Trapp, on March
26, 1935 in Coleman. Lonie had a
daughter, Pearl Anita Lopez, December 24,
1919-March 13, 1968, buried Talpa,
graduated from Talpa High School, married
Carl Faubion, son of L.A. and Willie A.
(Miller) Faubion of Crews. Two
children: Danny and Charlotte, who married
Eddie Monroe, now divorced, two children (see
Samuel Milton Monroe).
