The first school at Rockwood, School #1, District #11, later District #49, was one room, made of elm logs and stood where the M. D. Bryan home stands and was built in the middle 1880’s. Later a one-room building was erected near the site of the last school. In the 1895 - 1896 school term, W. C. Rickard was the teacher, with trustees J. E. M. Hunt, W. H. Rutherford and R. Cheatham. Families who had children attending school were Ashmore, Bodenhammer (Bodenheimer), Coalson, Goad, Horseman, Hunt, Johnson, King, Lovelady, McFarland, Mcllvain, Robertson, Rutherford, Rushing, Sanderson, Sanders, Shelton, Slater, Stewart, Stobaugh, Ussery, Vise and White. A Mr. Miller was teaching in 1907 or 1908. Two buildings burned at this site and the present brick building was erected in 1925. At the height of the school in 1938, there were some 225 students, with a faculty of eight, consisting of A. L. Allison, Mrs. Thomas Carter, Elizabeth Richardson, Frank McCreary Jr., Myrtle Tate and Curtiss Gregory (both from Talpa), Mrs. Carrie Hart and Myrtle McGregor. Rockwood had good football and basketball teams among the 225 students. Superintendents since 1925 were Mr. Straughan, Mr. Huggins, A. L. Allison and Mr. Bowers. Rockwood High School published a school paper called the Round-up. Rockwood High School students were transferred to Santa
Anna beginning with the 1942 - 1943 school term. Rockwood closed
on May 17, 1955, with 22 students and a faculty of two, after 13 years
as an elementary school. After being dormant for two years it was
consolidated with Santa Anna in 1957. Teachers the last year were
Mr. Williams, who had taught all of the last 13 years, and Mrs. Lon Gray;
Mrs. J. I. Avants operated the lunchroom; Bill Bryan, was president of
the school board and Mrs. Jack Cooper was president of the PTA.
