History of Coleman County and Its People, 1985
Trickham School was one of the oldest rural schools in Coleman County, dating back to the early settlement of Trickham in the 1860’s. A teacher at that time was David McAlester. William Gates Hubert taught in the 1870’s or earlier, and David McAlester again taught when they built the new log cabin for the school in the 1870’s. In 1876, David McAlester was driving a wagon to take children to school, and everyone was still carrying guns to school. But soon, more children were there and two teachers were employed. There were a Mr. Wilmouth and his daughter, Clara. Jesse Owen Woodward perhaps taught by 1880 in a school nearby. In 1881, a Mr. Holcomb and Miss Lyda Moberson taught. Then B. C. Hardin and Mrs. Eugene Wilson taught by the mid-1880’s at about the time the two story, two-room building was in use. It seems that the Masons had something to do with the making of this building about 1884 which was in use as a two-teacher school until 1913. Probably not listed as teachers on the roster at Trickham were two other teachers, men living in the community, who also made an imprint on the educational and religious life of the community, were W. D. Watson by the early 1880’s, and George B. Ford, who had a sheepskin from Tulane University, came before 1890. By the turn of the century or soon after were Wiley Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. Rice, Brother J. R. McCorkle, Miss Carey Copeland, and Miss Florence Copeland. To such a “Line of Splendor” the community and the world owe these pioneers a debt of gratitude. The next fifty years of the history of the Trickham School has been obtained and compiled by research mainly from the memory of those who have been participants as teachers or pupils. To those who have assisted in this venture, we are grateful. Names of teachers and the dates they taught will follow.
