COTTONWOOD STREET

West Cottonwood Street is the 1st street north of Live Oak Street.
It begins at North Commercial Avenue and extends west beyond Mountain Street.

Cottonwood Street originally began at North Concho Street and extended west, but now begins on the northwest side of the courthouse square.  On all early maps of Coleman, the first block of Cottonwood Street is referred to as North Street, later North Street being changed to Cottonwood Street, after the street was opened between North Concho Street and West Street.  (See 1925 article below.)  Other than the 1929 Coleman City directory references, I have found no other sources that gives any reference to an East Cottonwood Street, so it appears there was probably not an "East" and "West" to Cottonwood Street.

140 Votes Cast in Election Monday.  Opens Cottonwood

The co-operative plan of the City of, Coleman and the West Texas Utilities Company for the opening of Cottonwood Street was approved by the people of Coleman at a special election held Monday.  140 votes were cast.  138 favored closing that part of the public street on lots 3 and 4 in block 13 of Phillips Addition and 2 opposed closing the street.

The success of the election will mean the opening of Cottonwood Street through the Jones Hotel property.  The expense of filling in and opening said street will be defrayed by the West Texas Utilities Company and donated to the City of Coleman for and in consideration of lots 3 and 4 in Phillips Addition.

Under the new order the West Texas Utilities Company will acquire the old hotel property and remove it from the present site.  The north part will be made a street and the balance of the property, including lots 3 and 4 that have heretofore been a street, will be crowned with a building that will materially improve that particular part of the business district.

Very little interest was created by the election and the total vote was surprising to those who favored the proposition as a matter of civic pride.   Ordinarily 40 or 50 votes would have been considered a big poll.  The result is a welcome in concrete form to the West Texas Utilities Company.

The Jones hotel property belongs to a long list of heirs and it will necessarily be some time before the contemplated program can be carried out.
