Mrs. Moon died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday, November 4 in the Dublin Hospital. Born April 25, 1893 in Gunsight, she moved to De Leon at an early age. She married Roy Smith in 1910. He died April 18, 1958. She married Clark Moon in 1963. He died in 1968. Mrs. Moon was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include a daughter,

two sisters, Rosa Hulsey of Stockton, California and Lou Graham of
Glendale,
California; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. HENRY McDONALDHenry McDonald was born March 8, 1881
in Alabama. He died in
1906 while visiting family in Downing, Comanche County, Texas. He was the son of Lafayette & Mary Emma
V. Wilson and grandson of Oswell & Sarah Dover Wilson. Oswell
Wilson was a
brother of Volentine Wilson of Downing. Henry McDonald married Minnie
Beaty.
Survivors include his wife and one small daughter Mildred McDonald; one

Miss McGinnis was born March 9, 1912 in Comanche County, Texas to the late James Monroe McGinnis and Mamie O. Logan McGinnis. She was a long-time employee as a nurse at Methodist Hospital in Dallas and was a member of the Church of Christ. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1977. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Comanche County. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Willie Pierce Phifer, 56, of Rt. 3, Comanche, passed away at his residence Saturday morning, December 31, 1978, after a lengthy illness. He was born November 16, 1921, in Comanche, the son of the late Willie Duncan Phifer and Lillie Phifer. He was retired from the U. S. Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant. He married Chrystell Morrison April 23, 1943, in California. Mr. Phifer was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, January 2, in Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Born March 29, 1900, in Comanche, she married Arlo Hornsby in 1918 in De Leon. She later married John W. Pilgreen in 1952 in Abilene. A De Leon resident for four years, she was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Belon C. Hornsby of Lubbock; a daughter-in-law, Lillian Hornsby; a stepson, Clifford Pilgreen of Abilene; a step-daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ida Mae Woody of Tye; three sisters, Mrs. Ollie Johnson of De Leon and Mrs. Mattie Nelms and Mrs. Mammie Dennis, both of Comanche; a brother, Oner Kerley of Lake Whitney; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. | He was a sixth-grade
school teacher at Bryson Elementary School and had worked for the Eagle
Mountain School District for nine years. He was an active member of the
Northwest Church of Christ and was a resident of Fort Worth for 25
years. He served in the Air Force for 27 years. Survivors include his wife, Aline Quenon of Fort Worth; two daughters, Karen Rae Williams of Saginaw and Kathryn Jeanine Quenon of Arlington; two brothers, August O. Quenon of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Allen L. Quenon of Glendale, Calif; one sister Willie Flick of Tucson, Ariz; and four grandchildren. Before the sixth grade class of Raymond Hall Quenon was dismissed for spring break two weeks ago, they did something rather unusual for a group of 12-year olds. The Bryson Elementary boys and girls got together and composed a letter to their teacher, Raymond Hall Quenon. The youngsters explained that although it wasn’t the end of the school term, they wanted the teacher to know how much they loved him and would miss him when the year was over. The contents of the letter are particularly poignant now because Quenon, 59, died five days after he received it. Quenon was in good health until he admitted himself into a hospital March 14 complaining of chest pains. He died March 18 after suffering a massive heart attack. A 27 year Air Force veteran, Quenon retired in 1970 and went on to add to his degree from the University of Maryland a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the North Texas State University College. He first taught in an elementary school at Security Colorado, and as a School Counselor at Granada, Colorado. He later was employed as a counselor at Vernon Regional Junior College and worked for nine years as a sixth grade teacher for the Eagle Mt.-Saginaw I.S.D. He taught at Wayside Middle School for many years but with the completion of Bryson Elementary, Quenon’s classroom was transferred to the new school in 1985. The 25 year Fort Worth resident was remembered for saving the life of James Rodriguez, then a student at Wayside Middle School, in Nov 1981. The boy was choking on a piece of candy when the teacher came to his aid. By using the Heimlich maneuver and holding the boy upside down, the teacher was able to dislodge the candy from his windpipe. “He was a very dedicated, well-liked, highly motivated teacher,” said Eagle Mt. Saginaw School Superintendent Bill Anderson. “He had a great rapport with the kids.” Part of the teacher’s ability with youngsters came from a genuine sense of caring that “came across easily,” according to Bryson Elementary School Principal Bill Williams. It wasn’t unusual for the teacher to buy one of his student’s supplies if he couldn’t afford them himself. “I worked with him for two years,” Williams added. “He was a very positive, personable caring person.” Quenon was an active member of the Northwest Church of Christ and was being considered as an elder of that congregation. “He was an unusual man in that he was happy about all aspects of his life - - the church, his wife, |

and teaching,” said his daughter Karen Quenon Williams. “He loved his
life and never seemed to want for more. He was satisfied and happy.” Although many students and faculty were enjoying spring break, over 400 people attended the sixth grade teacher’s funeral March 21 at the Northwest Church of Christ. A military graveside service was held later in the day in Downing Cemetery in Comanche County. Tommy Nichols, a former student of Quenon’s, played taps for the military service. Pallbearers were teachers and administrators who worked with Quenon at Wayside and Bryson. They included David Prince, Bill Williams, Wayne Schickendanz, Bob Fredette, Leo Leslie and John Craft. Honorary pallbearers were Don Loudermilk, Roy Lee Loudermilk, Larry Lee Loudermilk, P.W. “Slim” Ellison, Buck Hulsey, Freddie Williams, and Gayle Loudermilk. Quenon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Aline Loudermilk Quenon of Fort Worth; daughters Karen Rae Quenon Williams of Saginaw; Kathryn Jeanine Quenon of Arlington; son-in-law Freddie Williams of Saginaw; grandchildren, Shane Williams, Kristie Williams and Jamie Williams of Saginaw; Jason Ray Quenon of Arlington; brothers August O. She moved to Abilene in 1933 where she owned a candy store on Butternut Street for several years and the Sayles Beauty Shop. She also worked for the Abilene Independent School District. She was a member of the Sixteenth and Vine Church of Christ and the Humana Senior Citizens Club. Survivors include a brother Joe Gunn of Abilene; a sister, Myrle Williams of Comanche; and several nieces and nephews, including Charlene Standly and Raymond McNutt, both of Abilene. Mr. Sadberry married Thelma Champion in De Leon, Texas on September 8, 1934. He was a retired farmer and former salesman for Golden Oak Milling Company. He was a lifelong resident of the De Leon area and was a member of Morton Chapel Methodist Church. She was born on August 16, 1914, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to the late Andrew Jackson Champion and Eula Lee Stansell. She was united in marriage to J. C. Sadberry, September 8, 1934, in De Leon, Texas. Mrs. Sadberry was a homemaker and had resided in De Leon most of her life. She was a member of Morton Chapel Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2006, in Nowlin Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kenneth Wilson officiating, assisted by Pastor Lisa Neslony. LaRessie Wilkerson and Vicki Robinett provided the music. Burial followed in the Downing Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Alan Sadberry, Ricci Coan, Jerry Mathews, Jackson Jobe, Wayland Fronterhouse, Kerry Barefoot, Randy Cleere, and Adam Sadberry. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn Adelle on December 6, 1994. | ORA INEZ SHUPP Ora Inez Shupp, age 90 of Midland, TX died March 8, 2001 at Trinity Haven Health Care, Midland, TX. Funeral Services were March 12, 2001 at the Nowlin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Downing Cemetery, Comanche County. The officiating minister was R. James Shupp assisted by Gary Elmore. Pallbearers were Michael G. Shupp, Anthony W. Shupp, Curtis Wayne Shupp, Bryant Shupp, Curtis Wilson Shupp, Valton “Bob” Smith, Charles Nunn, and Don Ellis. Mrs. Shupp was born on September 14, 1919 in Birmingham, AL to the late Andrew Jackson Champion and Eula Lee Stansell Champion. She was a homemaker and had resided in Midland 38 years. She is survived by sons, Damon Shupp and wife, Barbara of Midland, Gary Shupp and wife, Kathy of Midland, Dennis Shupp and wife, Cindy of Danvers, MA, Danny Shupp and wife, Toya of Amarillo, and Valton “Bob” Smith, son-in-law and wife, Fern of Lamesa; sisters, Thelma Sadberry of De Leon, Ola May Witte of Granbury; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Shupp; a son, Victory Wayne Shupp and a daughter, Geneva Smith, three sisters and four brothers. [MARKER] [PHOTO] JOHN EMERY STEVENSON III John Emery Stevenson III, 86, were held at 10:30 o’clock Friday morning, December 6, at Nowlin Funeral Home in De Leon. Burial was in Downing Cemetery. Mr. Stevenson died Wednesday, December 4, in De Leon Hospital. Mr. Stevenson was born in Indian Territory, now Gore, Oklahoma, and lived in De Leon 18 years, moving from Uvalde. He was a retired carpenter and a Mormon. Survivors include his wife, Marie Stevenson of Downing; a son, Douglas Stevenson of San Antonio; a stepson, Russell K. Smith of Arlington; two daughters, Phyllis Kalka and Norma Clevenger, both of San Antonio; a step daughter, Fae Yant of Antler, Oklahoma; two brothers, Richard Stevenson and Jack Stevenson, both of California; two sisters, Leona Gallentine and Hazel Phillips, both of California; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Downing Cemetery. She was born on September 11, 1930 to the late I.N. “Sam” and Icie Beaty Grissom in Downing, Texas. She retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company after 27 years of service. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in El Paso and was a homemaker. She was married to Edgar Sturdivant on September 1937 in De Leon, Texas |
