Not long

Mother soon
had to have help in caring f or us so she placed us in the Southwestern
Childrens Home in El Paso, T X. We went to school at Morehead

spent summers in Ruidos o, NM. Mother began looking for another type of
work so
we could all be to gether and soon met the Slaters who needed a
housekeeper/dietician for t he sick Mrs. Slater and they had a basement
apartment we could live i n. We went to another school which was Vilas

moved to
his house on Floyd Rd. n ot far from grandmother and grandfather
Boynton on
Lafayette Dr. We we nt to North Loop Elementary through 8th grade and

Decemb er
23, 1956.

was about
21/2 years old when we moved to Ysleta, El Paso C ty., Tx where my
sister,
Glenda Joyce was born in the Love Clinic on Mar ch 13, 1942 as was my

Kenneth Dale, on July 13, 1943. We mov ed to a house on North Loop Dr.

Dad's sister, Bonnie, s hared watchman shifts with our Dad.
I (Lajuana) started to
school here (Artesia) at Cottonwood school.
Notes for JACKIE LEE BURTON:
Jackie Lee Burton was
born in the family home at Thomas, Union Co., N M, on July 1, 1935. His
family
moved from Thomas back to the area around S an Jon, Quay Co., NM when
he was
quite young. Jack spent most of his li fe growing up in this area. He
went to
school here and graduated from S an Jon High School in May of 1953. He
was
active in FFA, basketball and b aseball
as a pitcher even though he preferred to play short stop. The bask
etball team
came close to being State Champions if there had been classifi cations
set up
as they are now. Jack is the youngest of five children. H is brothers
and
sister are Edmond Arvene, Buford Earl, Arthur C. and Ve ra Odessa. His
parents
Leo E. Burton and Dorothy Jacquetta Rotramble
we re born in Oklahoma.
In October 1953,
Jackie Lee Burton was
seriously injured in a headon coll ision near Clovis, NM while driving
his
sister's car and almost died. He h ad several serious cuts as well as a
main
artery in the temple area of h is head was cut causing him to lose a
lot of
blood and his right thigh w as crushed. He spent almost 9 months in
casts on
both legs, from the gro in to the ankle with a bar placed between both
knees.
Unfortunately, his l eg didn't heal properly so he had to go to El Paso
to an
Orthopedic surgeo n. The surgeon rebroke his leg and reset it, then
drove a pin
down throu gh the center of the bone. Bone grafts were set with screws
on the
side. A nother long period of healing then surgery again to remove the
screws a
nd the pin. After healing from the second surgery he had to use
crutches a nd
Jack endured several long weeks of intense therapy. Each time he went f
or
therapy his leg was bent as far as
possible,
then it was packed in i ce to keep the swelling down. After all of the
healing,
time, surgery a nd physical therapy Jack ended up with about a 90
degree bend
in his leg a nd his knee cap had been pulled down below the normal
location by
the ther apy pulling on the ligaments to the knee cap. While in the
hospit al
in El Paso Jack met Reuben Baggett (his roommate). Jack later mov ed to
Ysleta,
Tx, to rent from Reuben and his family and he found a job wi th Lee
County Gas
Co. He also met his wife here through Reuben setti ng up a blind date.
Marriage Notes for *LAJUANA ROCH and JACKIE BURTON:
I, Lajuana Dolores Roch
Burton was still in high school when I met Jack ie Lee Burton. He was
working
as a serviceman for Lee County Gas Co. lat er known as Western Gas
Service Co.
and later yet sold to El Paso Natur al Gas Co. A mutual friend of ours
(Reuben
Baggett) was in my biology cla ss and called me one Saturday night in
April
1956 to go on a blind date wi th Jackie. At first I was unable to go as
I had a
babysitting job. Wh en I told my mother about the date she said she
would have
taken my babysi tting job for me if she had known about my date. It
must have
been fate be cause Jackie didn't believe that Reuben had called me so
Reuben
called aga in to prove it to Jackie. I said you sure did call and I'm
glad you
call ed back because I can go out with you all now if you still want
to. So Ja
ck and I double dated with Reuben and his girlfried. We saw the movie
"Thr
ee Coins In A Fountain" at the drive in theatre and went for a coke at
t
he Red Rooster Drive-In Restuarant in Ascarate, El Paso County, El
Paso, T
exas. Jack was my date to the Junior/Senior Prom and we had a great tim
e. I
found out how much he loved to dance and how good he could dance. I w
as a
pretty lousey dancer but I think I got better after time. We beg an to
date on
a regular basis almost every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nig ht when
mother
would let me. A lot of week nights Jack would come over a nd we would
just
watch television such as it was during that time or we wo uld go for a
coke and
spend some time sitting in his car (a1940 Chevrole t) spooning and
listening to
the Louisiana Hay Ride or the Grand Ole Opr y.
During the summer Jack
and I went on vacation. He went home to San Jon, N M, to see his family
and
told his mother that he thought he was going to m arry me. I took a
train ride
to Los Angeles and Oakland CA, and Oregon wi th my family. The time
away from
each other didn't seem to dim the flam es as we continued to date. The
fall of
1956 was the beginning of my juni or year of high school and my
rebellion era.
I seemed to always be at od ds with my mother, my step-father and my
sister to
the point I thought I w ould run away. At about this time Jack asked me
to
marry him and I said y es then he asked my mother for my hand. I
thought he was
going to wri ng my hand off while he asked. He was so-o-o nervous. On
the day
befo re my birthday November 23, 1956 he bought and gave me my
engagement rin
g. We had been going together for eight months and we were engaged one
mon th
to the day when we were married on December 23, 1956. We left on our ho
neymoon
that same day to San Jon, NM, so I could meet his family for the f irst
time.
Now I was so-o-o nervous. I broke the ice the very first morni ng when
I was
trying to be helpful. I put what I thought was sugar in t he sugar
bowl, put 2
spoons full in my coffee, took a big swallow and spra yed the coffee
all over
everybody at the table because instead of sugar wh at I had put in the
bowl was
salt! I was so embarrassed but I wasn't nervo us anymore. All of Jack's
family
was always very good to me and his mom a nd dad treated me just like
one of the
family from the start.
Jack, his sister
Odessa, and his best friend, Red Aston and I went to o ne of the local
dance
halls on Christmas eve and really had a blast danci ng and goofing
around. We
spent some of our best vacations with Jack's old est brother Ed. Ed,
Ed's
family, Jack and I went camping and fishing in N ew Mexico and Colorado
almost
every summer after 1958. Then Odessa and fam ily joined us and later
our kids
were there too. We all had some great adv entures and have wonderful
memories
of those camping trips. One summ er we went to Yellowstone going
through New
Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Ida ho and Arizona. Those times are passing
fast now
that Ed, Buford a nd A. C. have passed on. Odessa and Jack are the only
two
left out of fo ur brothers and a sister.
At this writing, June
28, 2000, Jack and I have been married forty-three a nd one half
terrific years
and I wouldn't trade them for anything. We ha ve had bad times and
really good
times and endured them all. We have two g reat
children and four wonderful grandchildren.
