Dawson County, Texas

McWhorter Family

submitted by Shannon Spear

I do remember that a book was written back in the 1950's about the first settlers of Dawson County because a copy of it was given to my grandfather, I have no idea what became of the book.  It would be a great addition to the site if the first settlers were listed there.  From this article it also lists:  Hardy Morgan, E. G. Salser and E. R. Yates that were still living at the time of the article.  My uncle, John William 'Billy' Barrington and his wife were early settlers, but both were deceased at the time of the article.  Anyway, we all 'grew up' in Lamesa, so I am willing to help out with any information I have.

My grandfather, William Burton McWhorter came to Dawson County in 1889 before the town was itself began,

March 20, 1905.  I don't have the date of the article, but this was the Lamesa newspaper and refers to the June 5, 1952

when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  This article was May 26, so I am thinking it is the following year.

My grandmother came to Dawson County in 1902 when they were married.
