Plum Grove Baptist Church

Early History

The Plum Grove community was located on what is now FM 308 and Bee Creek Road. The Plum Grove Baptist Church, formerly known as Mill Creek, was organized August 13, 1883, by Elder Thomas E. Muse, then pastor of Milford Baptist Church. There were twenty-two charter members: W. A. Beachamp, William F. Weekley, William G. Hennington, W. F. Hennington, L. W. Duffee, G. T. Uray, D. C. Feazel, G. W. Whitfield, J. D. Sanford, E. A. Singleton, Martha S. Beachamp, Mollie Weekley, M. E. Sanford, Rosie Weekley, Mollie Whitfield, Mary Darden, M. F. Darden, C. C. Tennington, Fannie Feazel and Fannie Weekley.

U W. Jarrell, the first regular pastor, served from September September 2, 1883 until September 18, 1886. Then A. J. Whorton served one year until 1887. U. W. Jarrell accepted a call again and served one year. There was no pastor until November 1890 when A. D. Brooks was called and served 17 years. In 1906, Brother Luther Jenkins became pastor and served until September 5, 1908. Brother L. A. Herrin was called and served until June 29, 19120. Brother W. P. Elliott served as pastor until September 29, 1912. Brother Sanders served from Oct. 27, 1912 to August 23, 1913. Brother J. V. Goble was called November 1913 and served four months. Brother West from March 1914 until Jan. 1917; Brother Newburn from April 1917 to September 1917; Brother Steve Harwell from Feb. 1918 to Nov. 1919; Brother R. D. Burleson from Nov. 1919 to Oct. 2, 1926; Brother O. L. McCollum from Dec. 4, 1926 to 1935; followed by Brother Alsup (about six months) and Brother Jenkins.

Stones in the Plum Grove Cemetery, across the road from the church, were copied in 1957 by Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Feltenberger. Several graves were not marked and only two stones were recorded. [Plum Grove Community was located on what is now FM 308 & Bee Creek Road. The two graves are on the northeast corner of the intersection, surrounded by a log fence. The land owner maintains the grounds.]
