Britton, Texas
Britton is located in the northwest corner of Ellis County on Farm Road
661 and the Texas Central Railroad, very near the Tarrant county line. Joe
Pool Lake borders Britton on the north between Grand Prairie and Cedar Hill.
The community was first called Hollandville when the post office was
established in 1895, but the name was changed to Britton the next year.
About 1895, Mr. and Mrs. George W. McGee donated one and four-tenths acres
of land (purchased in 1889) to be used as a cemetery for this community.
The cemetery is located on the southwest edge of Britton at the end
of Noah Street, just east of the Methodist church. More land was added
in 1951. The oldest grave found in 1980 was that of Nellie Windle,
Nov. 6, 1892 - March 21, 1896, daughter of Forest S. and Lou Walker Windle.
In 1980, there were 274 markers with inscriptions, 4 cement blocks or
slabs, one sandstone marker, one wooden stick, one stone with no inscription,
and four illegible metal markers. In March 1999, a new inventory was
made in which were found 331 identified graves with markers, 2 missing or
not found (from previous list), 3 concrete unidentified, 3 field stones,
5 funeral home markers, 1 wooden marker and 4 unmarked graves, making a total
of 349. The cemetery is fenced and maintained and many descendants
of early families are buried here.
At one time, the town had a bank, school, church and several businesses,
including an egg processing center and a grain elevator. In 1925, there
were five businesses to serve 300 citizens. By 1932, statistics showed
a population of 200 with seven businesses. The school closed and mail
routes were divided between Mansfield and Midlothian. In 1980 and 1990
only thirty people lived in Britton with the Methodist church the focal point
of the community. The Britton Grocery Store and Farmers Supply were
still in operation.
It appears that Britton is in for growth, since the last time I was there
in 1999, a Grandview city limit sign appeared about where I had once seen
a Britton sign. Probably Britton was never incorporated and has now
been taken into Grandview, which lies mostly in Johnson County.
