Neil's Valley
Neil's Valley was located still further east between Leland and the Trinity
River. It was carved out of the T. J. Chambers survey and named for
Sylvanus Neil, an early settler. Other early settlers were the Nicklesons,
Brooks and Blackmons. Later, Dr. J. P. Clark, Oran Carter and Charlie
Hogge bought land here. Around 1930, Mr. McFarland bought this land
and set forth to develop a model farm, a scientific agricultural place, but
poor health forced him to abandon his project. W. D. Dixon bought the
place which became known as Valley Farm. At one time he stocked it
with Brahman cattle and hogs. There were several thousand pecan trees on
this 3,000 acre tract and Walker Creek runs through the valley.
Older people mention a super commodity. "The finest still producing
the mellowist, most palatable, most spirit-lifting drink ever to moisten
mrotal tongoe," was located here.
