New Town
New Town was an interurban stop at the south edge of Italy. Italy
was incorporated as a town in August,. 1891. One of the younger towns of
Ellis County, it was referred to as three towns. They were Old Town
(where nearly all business was transacted and was back from the railroad);
New Town (the area around the depot) and South Town (where the schools and
college were located). In January, 1891 there was nothing in the New
Town but a depot. By 1892, there was a cotton gin, two lumber yards,
one grocery store, one hardware and queensware, one tin shop and two hotels.
This appears to be the interurban stop referred to as New Town.
