Pluto & Berry's Chapel
Pluto is located about nine miles northwest of Milford on Ploto road off
FM Road 308, near the Hill County line. About a mile around the corner
to the west is Berry's Chapel where the Whitfield Cemetery is located.
It is difficult to separate these two communities. They were
established as early as the 1880s, if not before. A post office was obtained
in 1894, and Nancy L. McKenzie was appointed the first postmaster Aug. 28,
1894. Other postmasters were Charles C. Stephenson, May 25, 1895; Frank
A. Simmons Nov. 30, 1896; Green C. Burks, Nov. 17, 1898. Service was discontinued
Aug. 15, 1905 with mail sent to Milford.
In 1896, the population was 200 - there were three doctors, a store, a
gin, a gristmill, and Methodist and Presbyterian churches. The Methodist
church was just across the road north of the Pluto Cemetery. By 1933
to 1944, the population remained at about thirty-four. there are still
some residents in the area and it is also shown as a community on the county
map., No landmarks of the old community remain except for the two
cemeteries.
