Sonoma
Sonoma was an incorporated community within what is now the eastern edge
of the city limits of Ennis in southeastern Ellis County. Sonoma
incorporated in the summer of 1949 when its residents felt threatened by
'Ennis's proposal to build a sewage disposal plant near their homes. At
the time of incorporation, Sonoma numbered 205 residents; it grew to 305
by 1952 and to 350 by 1955. Its population was 503 in 1960 and 678
in 1980, when its businesses included four service stations, two stores,
two restaurants, a motal, the Isom Implement Company and the ennis Livestock
Commission. During the early 1980s, however, Sonoma voters chose to
disincorporate, thus returning their neighborhood to the original legal
jurisdiction, Ennis.
