Civil War Veterans From Other States Contributed by Bill Wood  06 Nov 1999 James E. Thompson J. E. Thompson was born in January 1838 in Tennessee and married Elizabeth H. Bonds Dec. 6, 1860 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He was living in Ellis County at the time he applied for his Confederate Pension #74469. [July 26, 1899] His CW service had been with Dibrell's 4th Tenn. Cav. Co. G. [at one time under McLemore's command. At this time, he stated he was 64, had lived in Milford, Ellis County since 1876 and was a farmer. Also that he had been with his unit nearly four years, was very feeble, suffering with asthma "of long standing." His application was approved Sept. 17, 1900 and he was admitted to the Confederate Home in Austin in October of the same year where he spent almost 12 years until his death July 13, 1912. He is buried in the Austin State Cemetery, Section One, Row D, Space #38. In The Confederate Veteran Magazine, Volume VI, No. 7, July 1898, page 327, he is mentioned as follows: "Camp Sam Davis in Texas - On February 27 the Confederates of Milford, Texas and vicinity organized a camp, christening it as a monument to the illustrious hero of honor, Sam Davis. The roster of officers and members illustrates how the veterans of Texas have come together from other states." James Thompson was one of numerous individuals mentioned in the roster of the camp. [Confederate Veteran XVIII, Aug. 1910] S. D. Davis, member of the Sam Davis Camp No. 1089 UCV, died at his home near Milford, Tex. March 5, 1910. He was born in Talbot County, Ga. Dec. 8, 1833 and served in Co D, Cobb's Ga. Calvary Legion in J. E. B. Stuart's Division, A. N. V. He married Miss Laura Carricker in 1866, joined the Baptist church in 1872 and came to Texas in 1883. Survivors were his wife, four sons and three daughters. He was a member from its organization of Sam Davis Camp and until his eyesight failed, was a reader of the Confederate Veteran. William A.
