Parson's Brigade - 12th Texas Cavalry CSAParsons' Journal Comes Home Contributed by Sylvia Smith, Chairman
On Saturday, May 20, 2000, Sande Wilkinson and I greeted Gayle Young, conservator of the book known as "Parsons' Journal and Order Book 1862-1865." Susan Maxwell, Shirley Williams and Lynn Davis were in on the excitement as well. Gayle has masterfully completed the conservation process for the 142-year-old book and its pages look magnificent! A display case from the Kimball Museum in Fort Worth was procured so that the journal will be permanently available for viewing in the genealogy room of the Sims Library in Waxahachie. We are so very pleased to have the book back in time for the Gingerbread Trail. The Sims Library Board, Ellis County Historical Commission, O. M. Roberts Sons of the Confederacy and other interested individuals have worked together to make this possible. A number of years ago, the Ellis County Genealogical Society had the foresight to have the book microfilmed which has allowed the Historical Commission to have a hard copy made from the microfilm. The Commission is in the process of compiling a full name and place name index which will be available for use at the Sims Library in the near future.
