Winnie Davis Camp No. 108 UCV
"Beauvoir" destroyed by Hurricane
Tuesday, August 30, 2005. Beauvoir, the last home of
Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America is
said to be virtually demolished by Hurricane Katrina. The house,
constructed in 1854, was later dedicated as the Jefferson Davis Presidential
Library and Museum. After Davis died, for a time Beauvoir
served as an Old Soldiers' home - a hospital for Confederate veterans and
their dependents. The house was located on a 51-acre site owned by the
Mississippi division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Since it
had been listed as a National Historic Landmark, it will be one of
the first to qualify for federal restoration money.
The United Confederate Veterans of Ellis County
named their Camp for his daughter, Winnie Davis.
