I surrendered at Appomattox River near Petersburg, Virginia, about 6th day of April, 1865. Regiment was captured.

I am 83 years old, was born in Anderson District, S. C. Have resided in Texas since 1866, in Ellis Co. 59 yrs. My P. O. is Waxahachie, Tx, Cantrell St. I am a retired newspaper man, and not in good condition physically.

The command in which I served was organized in So Carolina. I served for 3 yrs. Enlisted on 10, 1862; surrendered April 6, 1865.

Co. L. 1 SC Rifles - Infantry.

Value of home $900 - No other property.

Witnesses - T. C. Johnson & D. H. Gross.

Affidavit of Witnesses, W. B. Brazeals and A. L. Clinkscales of Dallas County, TX.

B. F. Carpenter entered service April 10th, 1862, as Private. His service expired April 9th, 1865. We belonged to Company C, 1st South Carolina Rifles, and B. F. Carpenter served in Company L, 1st South Carolina Rifles. We personally know that Mr. Carpenter was captured about April 6th, 1865, and remained a prisoner about 3 months. We have both known Mr. Carpenter continuously since.

War Department - The Adjutant General's Office - May 1, 1926

The records show that Benjamin F. Carpenter, Co. L. 1st (Orr's) S. C. Rifles, C.S.A., enlisted April 10, 1862, at Anderson, S.C.

Muster roll Nov. & Dec. 1864, (the latest on file) shows him present, a Private.

Prisoner of War records show that he was captured April 3, 1865, at Petersburg, and released June 16, 1865 at Hart's Island, N. Y. Harbor, on taking the Oath of Allegiance, a Private.

H. R. Stovall, County Judge Ellis Co., to Comptroller:

...........Enclosing applications for pensions, B. F. Carpenter, soldier, Cantrel St., Waxahachie, Texas & Mrs. Susan E. Kelley, widow of soldier B. F., Waxahachie, Texas.

Mrs. Kelley's was approved on April 26, 1926. B. F. Carpenter approved May 19, 1926.

Application for Mortuary Warrant:

B. F. Carpenter died on 24th day of March, 1928, in the town of Waxahachie, Ellis Co., Texas. Warrant applied for by Lee Carpenter, son. Certificate of Undertaker signed by Will Farley.

Certificate of Physician: W. F. West, M. D. attended B. F. Carpenter in his last illness - his ailments were: Cancer beginning on lower lip and extending to the surrounding Parts.
