Resolution of Respect

Waxahachie Texas 4/6/1914
Commander and Comrades of Camp Winnie Davis UCV

Our committee appointed to present to your body resolutions of respect to our departed comrade Hyam Cohen Have to report that Comrade Cohen was born Nov. 3, 1846 and died January 4, 1914, at Hubbard, Texas, after a long illness of some two years.

Comrade Cohen joined the State Troops of South Carolina in 1861 and was transferred to the Confederate Army in 1862 and served to the close of the war.  Our records do not state the character of service he performed but like most boys who entered the service at fifteen he doubtless did as hard service as his strength would permit.

Comrade Cohen loved the glorious Confederate Flag and demonstrated his devotion to it during his whole life. Recognizing his special love for this noble ensign which had floated so gloriously amid the smoke of so many bloody conflicts this camp trusted its flag to the faithful heart of Comrade Cohen, who delighted to carry it on all public occasions.  Though he died under our National Flag, let us hope that in his last moments, as his heart beats weakened, and his eyes grew dimer, that yet he caught a glimpse of the bright stars amid the folds of the old flag in either blue beneath the flag of pure white held in the hand of some loved comrade welcoming him to the haven of rest.

Resolved. That Camp W. D. has lost one of its most enthusiastic and devoted members and that we shall miss him as the years go by.

Resolved: That the Camp deeply sympathy[z] with his family in this day of great sorrow.

Resolved: That this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the camp and that a copy be furnished the family.

Committee: Wm Styles, T. B. Jackson, B. F. Marchbanks
