Letter written to Comptroller by Co. Judge F. L. Wilson, Ellis Co, Oct. 1, 1921:

I am sending you application of Mr. A. Dodson, for Confederate Pension. This old man is a citizen of Ellis County, having lived at Milford in this County, for some years. He has lived in Ellis County to my own knowledge all the time since 1900. He is at present at Frankston, Texas with a son, C. M. Dodson, to whom you will address his reply, or any other communication in regard to this pension application. He is feeble and may not get back to Ellis County soon, as he is forced to live among his kinfolks as best he can. He is a good old man and has always been recognized as a Confederate Veteran among old Confederate soldiers, and I hope you will find evidence sufficient to grant the pension.

WAR DEPARTMENT

The Adjutant General's Office,

Washington, Oct. 20, 1921

To Comptrollers Dept., Austin, Texas

Records of this office show that Alfred Dodson, (also born Al Dotson) Pvt. Co. C, 25 Tenn Inf, C. S. A. Enlisted Sept. 20, 1862 at Sparta, Tenn. On Co. M. R. for July & Aug. 1864 (last on which borne) he is reported as Deserted Aug. 10, 1863 from Louden, Tenn.***

P. C. Harris, The Adjutant General

***Note: He was on the muster roll for July & Aug. 1864, so how could he have deserted Aug. 10, 1853? He stated he served about 2 ½ yr. If he enlisted in the fall of 1862, as the War Dept. stated, it would appear that he was taken prisoner about 2 ½ yrs. later, and probably didn't count the time he was in prison, if he remembered.

Often, it is found when searching the records, that those who were in prison or lost from their unit were reported "deserted." Some of those lost have even been found listed in another Unit that they happen to find and finished the war with another unit.
