Elected  to Camp 1899

Ent Conf Serv Jan. 15, 1862, Pvt Co H, 12th Tex Cav; present at several skirmishes and on Scout Duty occasionally Never wounded nor taken prisoner. Detailed QM Depot 1863; dismounted at Calvert May 1865.  I entered the service at the age of 17 years. I now reside 4 miles SE of Waxahachie, Texas.  [Cullin H. Kelly died 1920]


Obituary

Funeral services for Cullen H. Kelley, Sr., 81, a resident of Ellis County for sixty-seven years, were held at the family residence Monday afternoon with a large group of friends and relatives present.  Also attending were Confederate veterans Col. B. F. Marchbanks and Mr. Ryburn. 

Mr. Kelley was born in Wilson Co. Tenn. Jan. 6, 1845 and died at his home of the Ed Wise Farm between Waxahachie and Howard Sunday morning.  He came to Texas in 1856, settling in Ellis County in 1859, and since that time had lived in or near Waxahachie.  He married Susie Elizabeth Parks in 1876.  To this union twelve children were born, nine of whom survive.  Besides his widow, five sons and four daughters are living - C. H. Jr., W. C., D. C., and Temp Kelley, Mrs. W. J. Pigg, Mrs. R. W. Trippett, Mrs. Jack [Keenom?] and Mrs. Carrie Kelley.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henry Price and pallbearers were B. Mc[At?]well, D. E. Tidwell, Leslie James, Gus Thomas, Clyde Keenom and Alex Farrar. Interment was in the city cemetery.

Kelley joined the Confederate Army Jan. 15, 1862 at the age of 17, and served until the close of the war as a member of Co. H, 12th Texas Calvary.

He served as deputy sheriff of Ellis County for several years, during the administration of W. D. Ryburn of Waxahachie as sheriff.  Upon being elected to the office of sheriff, Mr. Ryburn appointed Mr. Kelley, Tom Dixon and John [Brawley?][ as his deputies.  [Waxahachie Daily Light, March 29 and 31, 1926]

Note:  Name was spelled both "Kelley" and Kelly."
