S. L. Lackland was born in Richmond Va. March 8, 1838 - He enlisted in Co. 26, 4 Texas Infy July 1861. We understand that he was wounded in the lung while a member of said company - on which account he was discharged - Later he came to Texas and enlisted in the 7 Texas Cav. July 14, 1866 he married M. C. Shirhagen[?] in Falls Co Texas. He died in Waxahachie where he had resided almost constantly for nearly Forty years. June 2, 1914, age 76 years 2 mos and 24 days. He had been in feeble health for several years and his health grew gradually worse and for nearly two years he was practically confined to his room, and to his bed for about one year, and for several months before his death he was partially paralyzed - His suffering ,though long , was not often acute.

Death came to him as a kind friend with gentle hands to remove him from his sufferings.  He was a member of the Episcopal Church and one of the oldest members of our camp. He leaves surviving him his widow and four sons.
