M. W. Ludwick (Ludewick)

Pension Application #22466

M. W. LUDWICK (LUDEWICK) first applied March, 1912. He was 67 years of age. Was born in "Cabaris"  [Cabarrus] Co., N. C. Nov 9, 1844 and had lived in Midlothian, Ellis Co., Texas since 1854.

Witness: R. E. Orr & Robt. Morgan. Both made oath to the following facts:

"We both enlisted in Co. F 12th Tx. Cavalry in 1861, and at Duvall's Bluff Ark in Dec. 1862. M. W. Ludewick came and joined our Company. He served with us in our Company in Ark & La and was disbanded with our Company near Navasota on Brazes River in May 1865. Mr. Morgan knew Ludewick before they went to and both witnesses knew him personally in war at time stated."

Tax Assessor stated that he had a homestead valued at $800.

Neither the name W. M. Ludernick, Ludewick, nor Ludwick, or similar name, has been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of any company F, the 12th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and no record has been found of the capture or parole of a man bearing any of the names mentioned as of said organization.

The records show, however, that one M. M. Ludwick, private, Company F, 12th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted December 16, 1862. On the roll of the company for September 31, (1862) to December 31, 1863, dated December 19, 1864 (last roll on file), he was reported absent, furloughed August 25th for sixty days, sick in Texas. No later record of him has been found.

SECOND APPLICATION

M. W. Ludewick was born in "Cambarus" Co., NC. He was 69 yrs old when he signed his application on Aug. 20, 1913. He had lived in Midlothian, Texas, Ellis Co., Texas for 59 years.

He was a volunteer and served as a Private from Dec. ‘62 to May ‘65 in Co. F, 12th Tx. Cav. Was discharged near Navasotta, TX, May 25, 1865. "Our officers told us war was over & for us to go home."

He was a farmer, and had applied a year ago, Ellis Co., but never heard..

Witnesses, Robt. Morgan & S. C. Cooper made oath to the following:

"Robt. Morgan - I belonged to Co F 12th Tx. I knew M. W. Ludewick long before war. When he enlisted in ‘62 he joined my Co. We were in same "mustir" end of war. I saw him every day & personally know he served from ‘62 to close of war. He was a good soldier, did his duty well. He never deserted nor abandoned his post voluntarily."

"S. C. Cooper - I knew M. W. Ludewick before war. I belonged to 19th Tx & was brigaded with his Co. I was with him & saw him often & know personally he was a good soldier from time he joined till close of war. We were disbanded together."

County Assessor stated that he had real property at the assessed value of $1,680.

Pension was approved Sept 1, 1913; allowed from Dec. 1, 1913.

APPLICATION FOR MORTUARY WARRANT

M. W. Ludwick died in his home on the 2nd day of March, 1925 in the town of Midlothian, Ellis Co., Texas. Warrant applied for by wife, Mrs. M. W. Ludewick on 13th March, 1925.

WIDOW'S PENSION APPLICATION # 40665

"I am the widow of M. W. Ludwick deceased, who departed this life on the 2nd day of March, 1925 in the county of Ellis, Texas. We were married on the 27th day of July, 1893, in Ellis County, Texas. "

She was 59 years old, and born in Tenn., had lived in Ellis Co., Texas for 35 years. Her address was Midlothian, Texas. His full name was "Mose" W. Ludwick.

He served in a command organized in Texas - Original paper on file (Pension #22466) will show how long he served.

Signed: Mrs. M. W. Ludewick, Mar. 6, 1925.

Witnesses: R. B. Reeves & T. B. Olive - "See File No 22466.

Tax Assessor reported that she had a homestead of the value of $800, and personal property valued at $60.-

Letter of Mar 10, 1925 to Mrs. M. W. Ludwick:

"I am in receipt of your application for Confederate pension, but cannot approve same on account of your age shown therein. You state in application that you are 59 years of age. The Confederate pension laws require that widow applicants must have been born prior to the close of the year, 1861.

"Unless you may make affidavit, to be attached to your application, showing that you were born prior to the close of the year 1861, I shall be compelled to reject your application for a pension."

She filed affidavit April 1, 1925 -

"....on this day personally appeared Mrs. Charlie Ludwick, wife of M. W. Ludwick deceased, and being first duly sworn by me the 1st day of April, stated she is the daughter of W. M. and Mary Vanderpool, deceased. Second, that she was born at Elmwood, Tennessee July the 20th, 1860; Third, that she married M, W. Ludwick, deceased, in Ellis County, Texas on, towit - July 27, 1893.

"Further says that she is the same Mrs. Ludwick, widow of Deceased M. W. Ludwick, who made application for a widow's pension........"

The State of Oklahoma, County of Jackson, March 27, 1925 -

Affidavit of Mrs. Eva? Bass:

"..... Mrs. Eva Bass......says that she is the sister of Mrs. M. W. Ludwick of Midlothan, Texas, and both she and Mrs. Ludwick are the children of W. M. Vanderpool, and that she, Mrs. Bass, was born in the year 1862 and that her sister Mrs. Clarkie Eller Ludwick, wife of M. W. Ludwick, nee Vanderpool, was born at Elmwood, Smith Co., Tennessee in the year of 1860 as informed by her father W. M. Vanderpool and her mother Nancy Vanderpool......."

War Department, Washington, Dec. 23, 1936, to Comptroller of Public Accounts, Austin, Texas

"This office is interested in obtaining a statement of the military service of one M. W. (Mose Wiley) Ludwick, reported to have served with the Confederate States Army, Co. F., 12th Texas Cavalry and to have received a pension from the State of Texas until his death in 1924.

"His widow, Mrs. M. W. Ludwick of Midlothian, Texas, is now receiving a pension from the State of Texas.

"If this record can be located in your files, this office will appreciate a report of same."

Reply of Geo. H. Sheppard, Comptroller, State of Texas:

"This will acknowledge receipt of your letter......

"The records of this office show that M. W. Ludwick drew a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas under file number 22466 until his death in 1925. The application of Mr. Ludwick states he enlisted in 1862.... The application of Mr. Ludwick was approved on the affidavits of witnesses."

"This will serve as affidavit to the fact that the undersigned, Mr. D. W. Ludewick Sr. and Mrs. Faye Ponds, are the sole Heirs to the Estate of Mrs. Clarkie Ella Ludewick, and are entitled to the Mortuary Warrant Law as provided under Ar. 6227 (R.C.S. 1925). Will of deceased was probated in Ellis County the 11th of Jan. 1951.

"On January 25th, I mailed a blank form of application for Mortuary Warrant to Mr. D. W. Ludwick, Sr., ...... I asked that they execute the blank and return at once to this office. ........

I received an itemized statement of the bill and certificate of death from you, but it is necessary that the application be executed and filed with this office within forty days.

I am enclosing a duplicate application ..... Please have the proper person execute the application and return to this office at once.

....Mrs. M. W. Ludwick died Jan. 14, 1951 in the home of Mr. & Mrs. O. H. Witherspoon, a close friend, Midlothian, Ellis Co., Texas.
