Resolutions Waxahachie, Texas July 5, 1915
To Commander and Comrades
Camp Winnie Davis, No. 108 U. C. V.
Your committee appointed to report upon the death of our beloved and faithful
comrade John E. Poindexter, submit the following sketch of his life and
resolutions expressive of the high esteem of his comrades for him
Our departed Comrade John E. Poindexter was born in Forsythe county, N.
C. and later moved to East Bend County N. C. He was born Oct. 19, 1847. His
parents were J. J. and Martha Poindexter. He is survived by four brothers
and one sister, viz: C. A. Poindexter, Iowa; Will, Tom and Ruff of East Bend,
N. C. and Mrs. Laura Gilmore who lives in Kansas. His brother C. A.
and his sister were with him at his death and attended his funeral.
Comrade John E. Poindexter joined the Confederate Army Oct. 1864 when
he was just 17 years of age. At the close of the war he was a member
of the third N. C. Infantry. He was in Bloomington, N. C. and the fights
from there to Greensborough and from the imperfect record we have we assume
that he surrendered with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army at this place on
the 26th day of April 1865.
He came to Ellis County, Texas in 1870 and in 1872 married Miss Donie
Brawley. To this happy union were born three girls and four sons.
One girl died in infancy. There now survive him three sons and
two daughters, viz: Will Poindexter, now residing at Rockdale, Texas; Ollie
and Dee Poindexter of Waxahachie. The daughters are Mrs. G. C. (Mattie) Sweatt
and Mrs. Theo Farley of Waxahachie.
Comrade Poindexter was in bad health for several months, suffering, it
was supposed, with kidney trouble. He survived a severe attack only
ten days and died Sunday morning, June 13, surrounded by his children and
many loving friends. Many years ago he had been injured when a scaffold,
upon which he was working, fell, and never fully recovered. To know
him was to respect and honor him.
He was buried in Waxahachie cemetery June 14 at 4 p. m. Active
pall bearers were the following young men of Waxahachie, friends of him and
his family: Bob Gammon, Lucian Farley, Henry Henson, Tilman Connor, Geo.
Patton, John Davenport. Honorary pallbearers were old Confederate soldiers,
members of Camp Winnie Davis.
He was a zealous member of Camp Winnie Davis and one of its most regular
attendants. He frequently attended our State and general reunions and
was anxious to go with the boys to the last general reunion held in Richmond
June 1, 2, 3, 1915. But the cold hand of death was upon him. He
was weak, the enemy was strong. The noble heart of John Poindexter
ceased to beat. Death fixed its seal upon his lips. And all was over.
We shall no more hear his voice or shake his friendly hand.
Resolved. That this camp feels that it has lost one of its most
loyal members and each of us a true and dear friend. To know him was
to respect and honor him.
Resolved. That we tender to his children and loved ones
our most sincere consolation, his hope that now his warfare is over, he rests
forever in the shade of the trees by the side of the waters of the river
of life, his troubles and sorrows ended.
Resolved. That this sad dispensation shall draw us closer together
as comrades and friends.
Resolved. That these resolutions be spread upon our minutes and
a copy furnished the family of our deceased brother.
Respectfully submitted:
