Resolution of Respect

To the officers and comrades of Winnie Davis Camp No. 108 UCV

Comrade W. J. F. Ross was born at Macon Ga on 21 day of Sept 1833 and died in Foard County, Texas on 14 day of Feby 1915 and was therefore 81 yrs 4 mos and 23 days.

He entered the Confederate service on 19 day of April 1861, as a private in the 2 Ga Battalion and in same year was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major, was made 2nd Lt on July 15, 1862 and commissioned as Capt on June 22 18--.  He participated in battles of Seven Pines, those around Richmond, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Gaines Mills, Gettysburg and Appomattox.  He was wounded at Gettysburg July 2, 1863 and taken prisoner July 5 1863 at Baltimore and was again wounded at Petersburg June 22, 1864.

He became a citizen of Ellis Co in 186-? and since that time has lived among us.  He was always a loyal and upright citizen, making Waxahachie a splendid Mayor and Ellis Co an efficient Tax Collector.

The bugle has sounded for him its last time and he has answered his last roll call.  One by one our comrades are fast passing to the other shore.  Soon we will join them in the great beyond.

No grander man or nobler spirit that W J F Ross ever met the last enemy.  He slept his last sleep, he has fought his last battle. No sorrow can awake him to glory [blotted].

Resolved.  That a page of our minutes be set apart in his memory and that our tender condolence and sympathy be extended to the faithful wife and devoted children left behind.

"On other shores it may be ours to meet him - in brighter realms may it be ours to greet him."

C. R. Gibson and B. F. Marchbanks, Committee
