Richard Ellis Tomb Located

[Ellis County was named in honor of Richard Ellis. The following
abstract is from an article by Robert Lee Henry.]
Ellis was President of the Texas Constitutional Convention which
met at Washington-on-the Brazos in 1836. Mr. Henry notes that he has
searched for his burial place for several years and finally located it near
New Boston, Texas. In March 1916 he visited the site ....."Today
I stood at the grave of Richard Ellis on an elevation about five miles north
of New Boston in the family burial ground on the old Ellis estate. Huge red
oaks, white oaks and giant hickory trees stand guard and at the head of
the grave is a wild plum tree. The marble headstone beneath the image
of the Lone Star is the inscription;
In Memory of Richard Ellis
Born February 14, 1781
Died December 20l 1848
He was President of the Convention
that formed the Constitution of the
Republic of Texas
