The young planter, James Eastland, who was assassinated by a negro named
Holbert near Doddsville Miss., Wednesday, Feb. 3, was related to Capt. M.
Eastland and Mrs. Charley Crocker of Waxahachie. Mr. Crocker, who returned
from a visit to Forest, Miss., says the killing of young Eastland created
wild excitement in that part of the state. When he left Mississippi
on his return home more than a thousand men were scouring the country for
the negro and he was not surprised Monday when he read of the capture and
burning of Holbert and his wife. Eastland was about twenty years old
and was engaged to be married this spring.
