Captain J. E. Hawkins Dead

Capt. J. E. Hawkins died suddenly on the Santa Fe train between Valley Mills and Morgan while en route to the latter place.  His daughter, Mrs. John McMurrow, of Frederick Okla. was with him at the time and said he had appeared well when suddenly gasped and passed away without word or struggle.

Capt; Hawkins was born near La Porte, Ind. Dec. 13, 1829 and came with his parents to Texas in 1848, locating in Ellis County near present Midlothian.  He was practicing law in Waxahachie when the Civil War began and made up a company with Parsons Brigade to enter service with the Confederacy.  He was wounded on two occasions during the war.

In the late 1860s Capt Hawkins was District Attorney  for a large areat including Ellis, Johnson, Erath, Parker and a number of other counties and represented Ellis County in the State Legislature in the 1970s.

Since his wife's death in 1881 he had lived with his children and called this city, where his son W. H. Hawkins, his home.
