Cerf House Contributed by Jane Bell Smith |

The old Cerf home was a replica of one from the 1900 World's Fair in Chicago. Mr. Isadore Cerf brought the plans back from the World's Fair and built the house for his first wife around 1902 and took over 2 years to complete. When his first wife died, Mr. Cerf married her sister, Mamie. The front entry of the home was on Ennis Avenue with doors that opened to a large foyer. At the opposite end was the staircase to the second floor. The property occupied half a city block and tall evergreen hedges formed a barrier from the alley at the back of the property. Climbing red rose bushes grew along the black wrought iron fences. Tall hedges framed the drive and turnaround driveway. Eventually the house was torn down, probably in the 1950s. The building site is presently occupied by the Ennis Public Library. Picture courtesy of DelMarie Murphy and Ennis Daily News. |
