Peg's Photo Album
Contributed by Peg Gueringer Blask |
I have finally scanned a photo album that my cousin found in the belongings of my great grandparents. My great grandmother was Medora Elmore Young Gueringer who was the daughter of Robert H. Young and Ann Colville Edmondson Young. Medora was born near Forreston, TX near Chambers Creek. The photos were taken around 1903-1907 of what appears to be Waxahachie and Onion Creek or Chambers Creek. I can identify her son, Louis Amedee Gueringer at about age 7-10 in the photos. Other persons who appear in the photos are pretty much unknown, except that I can guess at some of them. Perhaps your viewers will be able to identify them. The photos include: children frolicking in one of the creeks, my ancestors at home on the farm, descendants of the family slaves who stayed with the family when they migrated from Tennessee to Texas, and more. This photo album was found in a storage facility in San Antonio, TX about 8 years ago. From what my family and I can tell, the items were left there around 1916 and never claimed until eight years ago, when the items were discovered by the new owners of the storage facility. The items included everything my great grandparents owned at the time. Why they were stored is a mystery, but we have a few guesses. The photos appear to be taken around 1903-1907 as that is the earliest dates that the KODAK brownie camera was in operation. My grandfather, Louis Amedee Gueringer, Jr. is shown as a boy in the photos and we recognize him to be aged about 7 to 12 years. He was born in 1893. It is known that he visited with his parents every year, the Ellis County area to see his maternal grandmother, Ann Colville Edmondson Young. His mother was Ann's only child, Medora Elmore Young Gueringer. Medora married Louis Amedee Gueringer, Sr. in 1892 at her mother's house in Ennis. My grandfather was born there in Ennis. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved him to several small towns around Texas (his father worked for the railroad) until they landed in Victoria where he (my grandfather) essentially grew up. The photos include my grandfather and his cousins and other assorted relatives. We can identify some photos definitively, others, we can only guess at. The pool of persons that we can guess at include the family of Y. C. Edmondson and Elmore Edmondson (Ann's brothers). The best guess for the children are the grandchildren of Ann's sister-in-law, Nancy Jane Young Hines. Nancy is the sister of Ann's husband, Robert Young, who died as a very young man in 1880. Nancy married Thomas Hines and had several children. I believe the children in the photos to be the grandchildren of Thomas and Nancy Hines. The creek is most likely Onion Creek or Chambers Creek as Ann owned property through which these creeks ran. Her husband, Robert, was a cotton grower and rancher before he died. (Robert is listed is the book about Ellis County residents that you have in your library in Waxahachie). |
