2-story Rankin School 1907 to 1915 (burned in 1915)

The original Rankin School started in 1878 and shared the 2-story Rankin Chapel building with the Chambers Creek Masonic Lodge. That building burned in 1904 and new (separate) school and lodge buildings were built.

This photo shows the second Rankin School building, built about 1907 (or earlier). It was built on land that was part of the Sanderson Farm, located 1/2 mile west of the Rankin Masonic Lodge building on the road between Rankin and Astonia where it intersects the north to south Cartwright road. This school burned about 1916 and the third and last Rankin School was built on the same site. The photo was made just as construction was completed. The Rankin School was discontinued after the 1955-56 school year and classes consolidated with the Byrd School 2 miles to the east. After one or two years, Byrd School was closed and all students in Rankin and Byrd were bussed to Ennis. The 3rd Rankin School was torn down in the early 1960's.

The new Rankin School when it was completed in 1916.
