First United Methodist Church On January 30, 1944, Dr. and Mrs. A.L. Thomas, through their love and devotion to the church, presented the Board of Trustees two choice lots in the 300 block of North McKinney Street In April 1945, another lot, adjoining the first two, was purchased with funds supplied by T.A. Barrington, F.N. Wilson, J.E. Keever, W.B. Rider, Sr., W.D. Arden, H.R. Thomas, H.C. Rogers and Owen Gilpin. In 1949, another lot adjoing the building site was presented to the Board of Trustees by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas. On August 31, 1949, in a called session of the Church Conference, the Building Committee was authorized to contract for the construction of a new church building. Ground breaking was Sept 27, 1949. The old church bell from the church on S. Dallas, was placed in the new building. On Jan 28, 1951, Bishop William C. Martin preached the first sermon.
